Shaneen, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience came through my faith in God when situations and circumstances told me to quit and give up on my dreams and purpose. I look to God for strength and determination to reach the top.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Multi-Award screenwriter and a businesswoman who started like everyone else. I started as a music artist wanting more in the entertainment industry. I decided to start my first business as a record label owner since I was a two-time Grammy-nominated artist. Decree Records.

Once the record label was established, I wondered how the artists and I could get airplay. I decided to start an internet radio station called Decree Radio while still working a 9-5 job.

So, now we have the record label and radio station; all we need is promotion and marketing. I started Decree Magazine to get promotions for the artists on the label.

My film story began when I experienced homelessness in Los Angeles. I lived in an abandoned house without heat or water. I had never tried drugs or alcohol before moving to Los Angeles, yet I experienced homelessness when I moved there. I’m a screenwriter who has won over thirty film festival awards for my film From Homeless To Hollywood.” From homeless to business owner is my story now.

My advice to anyone reading my article is not to give up when times get tough—tough times create resilient people.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Number one is how to run a successful entertainment-based business. Number two is a skill that taught me how to multitask while in demanding roles such as working a 9-5 job and entrepreneurship. Thirdly, I have learned perseverance from my mother. Never give up on the things that will cause you to be prosperous and happy.

How to develop or improve your skills is to stay focused on the task at hand,

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My mother, Linda, has been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges in my life. My mother has taught me to face my struggles head-on and conquer whatever is ahead of me for success.
