Meet Shaneisha Dodson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shaneisha Dodson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Shaneisha , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I’ve learned that being the only one in the room who looks like me sometimes comes with challenges such as being second guessed, having people over talk you, or having someone question everything that you do even though you are competent. I’ve learned to be successful by being confident in myself and maintaining my integrity. I don’t allow other people’s perception of me influence my ability to do my job.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been writing, producing, and directing plays since 2012. At this moment, I’m working on my next Love Letters to the Black Man event that will bring awareness to mental health issues and anything else that focuses on positivity for black males. This is one of my signature events. We are working to make it bigger and better each year.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been most impactful is my optimism, resilience and ability to keep pushing even when times get hard. My advice for people early in their journey is believe in yourself. If it’s something that you really want to do in life, keep trying until you get it right. Don’t put an age limit on your dreams.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My faith has been most helpful in helping me over my challenges. I pray about everything. I always tell myself to trust God. Whatever happens is suppose to happen.
