Meet Shanice Ruffin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shanice Ruffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shanice below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Shanice with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I attribute my work ethic from my mother and my personal goals/ambition. My mother was very dedicated, committed, and relentlessly persevered through hardships. She has influenced the way I approach both my personal and professional life, instilling in me the importance of hard work, responsibility, and resilience.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a dedicated and compassionate social worker and mental health therapist, I am committed to providing empathetic and effective counseling services to individuals from diverse backgrounds. With years of experience in the field, I have had the privilege of working with several populations, including adolescents, high school students, young, middle-aged, and geriatric adults, veterans, and individuals with IDD. My therapeutic approach is rooted in creating a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were the most impactful in my journey were empathy/emotional intelligence, problem solving/critical thinking, and cultural competency/diversity awareness.

For social workers and/or mental health therapists that are early in their journey; I advise them to seek supervision and mentorship, embrace lifelong learning, and prioritize self-care and boundaries.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My biggest area of growth has been learning to embrace the good happening in my life, while consciously letting go of self-sabotage, allowing me to cultivate gratitude and fully appreciate my journey.
