We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shanna Bynes Bradford LME, MA, CR. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shanna below.
Hi Shanna , so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Absolutely! Here’s a response that captures the essence of risk-taking and seizing opportunities:
Taking risks has always been an integral part of my journey, and I’ve developed this ability through a combination of mindset, preparation, and a relentless drive to seize opportunities. Here’s how I approach it:
1. Embrace the Unknown: I’ve learned that fear of failure can be paralyzing, but I choose to see the unknown as a field of possibilities rather than a threat. This shift in perspective allows me to run towards opportunities with enthusiasm and an open mind.
2. Seize the Moment: Life is fleeting, and opportunities often come without warning. I’ve trained myself to recognize these moments and act decisively. It’s about being present and ready to jump when the chance arises.
3. Clarity of Goals: Knowing what I want to achieve gives me a clear direction. I maintain a list of my goals, both short-term and long-term, and this clarity helps me evaluate risks against potential rewards. It’s easier to take a leap when you know what you’re aiming for.
4. Learn from Failure: Fear of failure diminishes when you see it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Each failure is a lesson that brings me closer to success. This resilience builds confidence, making each subsequent risk easier to take.
5. Shoot for the Stars: I believe in aiming high. Even if you don’t always hit the mark, striving for greatness pushes you beyond your comfort zone and opens up possibilities you might not have considered otherwise.
In essence, taking risks is about courage, preparation, and a clear vision of what you want to achieve. By embracing these principles, I’ve been able to navigate challenges and seize opportunities with confidence and determination.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have been instrumental in shaping my journey: hard work, dedication, and the power of mentorship. These elements have not only driven my success but also helped me navigate the highs and lows of my career.
1. Hard Work: There’s no substitute for hard work. It’s the backbone of any successful endeavor. Consistently putting in the effort, pushing through challenges, and maintaining a relentless work ethic has been crucial. It’s about going the extra mile, staying late when needed, and always aiming to exceed expectations.
2. Dedication: Dedication is about commitment and passion. It’s the unwavering belief in your vision and the persistence to see it through, despite obstacles. Dedication means staying focused on your goals, continuously improving, and never losing sight of your purpose.
3. Mentorship and Networking: Surrounding yourself with professionals who can mentor you is invaluable. Mentors provide guidance, share their experiences, and offer insights that can help you avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities. Building a network of knowledgeable and supportive individuals creates a resource pool that can be tapped into during challenging times.
For those early in their journey, here’s my advice on how to develop or improve these qualities:
– Stay Hungry and Never Stop Learning: The business landscape is constantly evolving. To stay ahead, you must remain curious and open to learning. Whether it’s through formal education, workshops, or self-study, continually expanding your knowledge base is key. This not only enhances your business acumen but also keeps you adaptable and innovative.
– Seek Out Mentors and Build Your Network: Don’t underestimate the power of a strong network. Actively seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support. Join professional groups, attend industry events, and connect with like-minded individuals. A robust network can provide opportunities, advice, and encouragement.
– Embrace Challenges and Learn from Them: Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Embrace difficulties as learning experiences. Analyze what went wrong, adapt, and move forward stronger. This resilience will build your confidence and reinforce your dedication.
– Stay Focused and Organized: Develop a clear business plan and set specific, achievable goals. Staying organized helps you manage your time effectively and ensures that you remain focused on your priorities. Regularly review and adjust your business processes and models to stay aligned with your objectives.
In summary, hard work, dedication, and mentorship have been cornerstones of my journey. For those just starting out, maintaining a hunger for knowledge, building a supportive network, embracing challenges, and staying focused will set a strong foundation for success. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination, so stay passionate and committed every step of the way.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my grandparents, Daniel and Beatrice Simmons, did for me was instilling in me the belief that I could reach for the stars and never give up on my dreams. Being raised by them was a blessing beyond words. Their unwavering commitment to hard work and their encouragement shaped the foundation of my character and aspirations.
My grandparents were the epitome of dedication and perseverance. They taught me that with hard work, anything is possible. Watching them work tirelessly and yet always finding time to support and motivate me left an indelible mark on my heart. Their belief in my potential gave me the courage to pursue my dreams, no matter how daunting they seemed.
Daniel and Beatrice Simmons were my dad and mom, blessing from God. They were my mentors and my biggest cheerleaders. Their life lessons went beyond mere words; they were demonstrated through their actions and the way they lived their lives. They showed me the importance of resilience, the value of integrity, and the power of relentless effort.
I owe my grandparents the world, and I carry their wisdom and love in my heart every single day. Their legacy is a constant reminder that I stand on the shoulders of giants, and their teachings continue to guide me in every endeavor. They have made me who I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
In essence, the most impactful thing my grandparents did was to believe in me and teach me to believe in myself. Their encouragement and example of hard work have been the driving forces behind my journey, and I strive to honor their legacy by reaching for the stars and never giving up on my dreams.
