We recently connected with Shannon Boyce and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Wow. That’s a great question with a somewhat “non-traditional” answer! I absolutely love helping people. Helping others and making them smile makes ME smile! If you are in need of something, and I hav the ability to meed that need for you without causing my family any issues, I will. I believe that, my generosity, comes from me being a Girl Scout as a kid! I would have never thought about that if a friend hadn’t pointed it out! We were out to dinner once, and after we finished eating I started stacking plates and clearing the table a little. You know, just to make the waitresses job a bit easier. Everyone else at the table says, “What are you doing? That’s their job!” My idea is, ‘why not make their job easier if we can?’ And even after cleaning the table a little, I expect everyone to pitch in a help leave a nice tip!
I also believe my childhood had a lot to do with it. I grew up in lack. But, somehow we always had enough. My grandmother and her aunt (my great-great aunt) raised my sisters and I. We lived with them in a neighborhood with older women. My little sister and I were the only kids on the street. If anyone needed anything, it was very common for one of them to make a phone call to another family on the street and my younger sister and I be sent to make the pick-up or delivery. I grew up with a village of women around me who all at some point were in need, and they all provided for one another.
I keep that close to my heart. If I’m “good”, we’re all good. And I mean that!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started out making handmade products (which I still make), but that journey lead me to tap into some of my other gifts and skills. Since starting Bodied by Shannon, I’ve earned a few certifications and gotten ordained as a minister. The product based portion of my business is still very important to me, the spiritual side has stepped to the forefront. After becoming a minister and becoming a certified spirituality coach, I started offering what I call intuitive coaching sessions where I use my intuition to help others with questions they’re having a hard time answering on their own.
My goal for Bodied by Shannon has always been Holistic Health. Meaning I not only want to make “feel good products”, I want to be able to offer those who come my way mental, physical and possibility emotional assistance. I will always be available to those who need a listening ear.
I am not a therapist! If anyone needs services beyond my education I also try to help them find the help they need from a professional in that area.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important skill would be the desire to learn. I love learning. If I had the ability to be a life long student and get paid to learn, I would! I’d take every course available. Secondly would be time management. I’m fully aware that my business would be further along if I managed my time better. I’m a stay-at-home wife and mother of 4 kids. My home with my youngest (3 years old) all day. I have never set a specific time frame for my business to work on content creation, business management and the basic needs of my business.
Patience is king! We have seen a lot of businesses pop up and make hundred and thousands of sales overnight, but that’s not the norm. It’s going to take time and patience. Even if you do happen to have an amazing launch sale and make hundred of sales overnight, it’s not going to be something that happens every launch or sale. Having patience with yourself and your business (no matter your area of business) will take you a long way.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
10 years ago, my oldest brother passed. I joined some Facebook groups to take my mind off what I was going through and I met this amazing woman named Angela! We added each other on Facebook because we shared a birthday, but she quickly became one of my dearest friends and mentor. She’s helped my personally during my mental health struggles, and with my business. I told her my ideas for my products and not only did she tell me what would sale, she gave me full recipes to try. She introduced me to herbalism and which herbs were better for which products. I’d tell her what I wanted to work on, and she would tell me exactly how to make it, pricing, and sometimes, how to market it! Angela never wants credit or payment for anything she’s helped me accomplish. But! When I make it, she absolutely goes with me!
