Meet Shannon Burgess, Od

We recently connected with Shannon Burgess, Od and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Shannon with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I attribute my work ethic to my parents, who set a powerful example of perseverance and dedication. My father worked as an ironworker, enduring hazardous conditions in a variety of environments to provide for our family, showing me the importance of resilience and hard work. My mother, a nurse, often balanced working long hours and overnight shifts to ensure she could still be present during the day to care for my siblings and me. Their sacrifices taught me the value of determination, adaptability, and always making the family a priority. Their commitment to providing a better life for us has inspired me to approach my own responsibilities with the same level of dedication and care.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can tell us about your company mission and how you’re looking to grow?

At Valley Forge Eye Care, we seek to improve the lives of our patients by maximizing their vision, allowing them to perform their jobs, pursue their hobbies, and care for their loved ones.

We are committed to providing individualized care and take pride in being accessible and responsive to our patients and their needs.

As digital eye strain and dry eye syndrome become increasingly common, we are investing in innovative technologies and advanced treatments to address these issues effectively.

We define success when our clients achieve and maintain healthy functional vision that lasts a lifetime. Our greatest compliment is when our service inspires patients to trust us enough to refer their friends and family to our practice.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe my greatest skill as a practitioner is listening to patients’ needs and providing tailored solutions to their problems. The way we use our vision today has evolved significantly compared to even just ten years ago, and there is no single solution that works for everyone. We take the time to really get to know our patients, asking about their environments, their workstations, their hobbies and determine the best options for them.

Clear communication is another key aspect of my role. If patients don’t fully understand their condition or the recommended treatment, they are less likely to follow through. It’s vital to create an environment where they feel heard and comfortable asking questions.

This approach extends to my team as well. I encourage staff members to actively contribute to streamlining processes and enhancing the patient experience.

One piece of advice I always give is to find a mentor early on. Having a mentor will provide guidance, serve as a sound board, and hold you accountable to your goals, this aspect has been crucial for me. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of letting go of perfectionism and focusing on steady progress when implementing changes.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

Our ideals patients are those who prioritize their health and recognize the vital role that vision plays in their everyday life. In our fast-paced world of next-day delivery and online experiences, it is easy to overlook the importance of long-term care. However, investing in regular eye exams to maintain healthy vision is a commitment that pays off, ensuring a better quality of life for years to come.
