Meet Shannon Kane

We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Kane recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

Working in the customer service industry, especially in a hands-on career like hairstyling, I’ve learned that self-care isn’t optional — it’s essential. I can only show up fully for my clients if I’m also taking care of myself.

For me, that looks like getting regular massages to keep my body feeling its best, treating myself to facials as a way to relax and feel pampered, and prioritizing rest so I can recharge. I also make it a point to move my body regularly, because staying active keeps my energy up. I’ve also realized how important sleep is — getting quality rest not only restores my body physically but also sharpens my focus and creativity, which I need every day behind the chair. Just as important, I attend therapy to take care of my mental and emotional health.

By practicing self-care in these ways, I’m able to show up for my clients with more patience, creativity, and energy — which ultimately allows me to give them the best experience possible.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a licensed hairstylist since 2017. I worked at two different salons where I had the privilege of learning and training alongside incredible talented stylists. After working in the salon for 5 years, I decided to branch out. This is when Rose & Co. Studio was born.

I opened Rose & Co. Studio in 2022, in Westlake, Ohio. This was a major dream for me- I had the flexibility in my hours but also had the control of the atmosphere I wanted to create! It was very important that this studio created a safe, comfortable and relaxing environment for my clients to enjoy. Having a space where my clients felt more comfortable helped build even stronger and deeper relationships.

I am a color specialist! I love working to create a look that is custom to my clients. Whether its a bright blonde, rich carmel, deep brunette or a fire-y copper, color is my passion. Creating new looks through different tones, levels and techniques allows me to tap into an artistic side of me. Having control and freedom to create art while simultaneously boosting the confidence of my clients is a feeling I cannot put into words.

A year ago, I decided to add a new branch to the salon – Linked by Rose & Co. This allowed me to continue doing what I love while adding another passion – jewelry. I have always loved jewelry, but with a severe nickel allergy, affordable pieces was a struggle for me. With permanent jewelry, there is no worry about quality. These pieces are high quality 14k gold filled and 925 sterling silver. No need to worry about allergies or sensitivity. Having the option for an affordable piece of jewelry that didn’t cause skin issues was a no brainer for me. My clients love permanent jewelry!! You can find me at local businesses for pop-up events or right inside my studio ready to link your new piece!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Growing up, I always played sports and was lucky enough to have my dad as a coach. I remember him telling me, “Always be coachable.” That is something that has stuck with me over the years.

Being open to constructive criticism and willing to adapt is so important. There is always something to learn and room for growth. Surround yourself with people you admire and look up to. Keeping an eagerness to learn will help you to grow, spark inspiration and prevent burn out.

When I decided I wanted to create my own salon, I had a very clear vision. I wanted more than just a salon. I dreamed of a safe, welcoming space where people feel beautiful, confident and cared for – even if they didn’t walk in feeling that way. Keeping a clear reminder of my “why” has helped me to advance in my journey.

Trust is so important in the beauty industry! Clients are coming in and leaving their hair in your hands. I put everything into my client hairs. Every detail is so important. Consistency, honesty and care are what build lasting relationships and allow clients to trust you.

My best piece of advice is to be coachable. Learn from everyone. Be a sponge, soak up as much information, knowledge and wisdom as you can. You can learn something from every person you come in contact with; fellow stylists, salon owners or clients!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was believed in me. When I didn’t believe in myself, they did. When I was doubting my ability, they were filled with confidence.

I remember early in my career feeling like it was too much. I didn’t think I had what it took to be successful, I didn’t think I was talented enough. I would call my parents and break down. Without hesitation, they filled me with confidence, love and support. They pushed me to be better, to grow and to have faith. They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

After my first year in business, I was so proud of myself. It was one of the first times in my career that I felt like I was successful, almost in a shocking way. I called my parents to share and they were proud of me, but they weren’t shocked. They had no doubt that I had what it took, that I was willing to work hard and that I would be successful. My biggest cheerleaders.
