We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shannon Mains a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Growing up this was an area that I always struggled with. Being the tallest kid in the class, and a girl, meant that I was always made fun of or picked on. I struggled to believe I was worthy. I remember being so scared to go to middle school because I didn’t have the confidence in myself. I was nervous for the new school, new teachers, new students and a completely different way of attending classes all day, having to from from all day in 1 room to wandering between 7 classes a day. It got to a point that it was debilitating. So in 7th grade I started learning about the importance of learning to control my thoughts and emotions. I learned breathing and relaxation techniques, which as I got older turned into the importance of learning that my thoughts and words have power. As I transitioned out of my 12 year nursing career and into entrepreneurship, I found so much more value in learning and practicing daily to believe in myself. I used the motto “if they can do it, so can I”. I spend a few minutes every day reading books on mindset, journaling and taking care of my mind.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
From the age of five, I dreamed of becoming a NICU nurse, caring for the tiniest and most fragile babies. I followed that dream, earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at 22 and dedicating over a decade to working in the NICU. While I loved my work, the reality of 12-hour night shifts, six nights a week, began to take its toll. When the chance to build a side income in skincare came my way, I knew I had to at least explore the possibility. The way I saw it: the worst-case scenario was nothing would change; the best-case scenario, everything could.
Within a year, I had achieved something I never thought possible—I retired from nursing by choice and supported my husband in pursuing his career dreams. I fell in love with entrepreneurship, discovering a way to channel my passion for helping people into a new arena. Whether it was helping someone feel confident in their skin or empowering them to build a business on their terms, I found immense fulfillment in this new path.
For 12 incredible years, I thrived in that role until the company changed its structure, eliminating leadership opportunities. Overnight, I lost not only a significant income but also the community of people who had profoundly impacted my life. It left me at a crossroads: what now?
Thankfully, I had started a travel agency based on my love of adventure, but I wasn’t ready to return to the traditional workforce or nursing. I knew if I were to step back into this industry, it had to align with my values, experience, and this new chapter of my life.
After many tears, a lot of soul-searching, and meetings with CEOs, I found a company that felt like home. Its focus on clean, clinically tested health, wellness, and beauty—from the inside out—aligned perfectly with my personal health journey. I saw the potential to help others achieve their vision of a clean body, skincare routine, and home.
What excites me most is how this industry allows people to grow—personally and financially—while making a meaningful impact. This company’s 70-year history provides credibility, yet its innovative, ageless product launches bring a fresh energy that feels like the best of both worlds.
Today, I’m thrilled to help people lead healthier lives through this new venture while continuing to grow my travel agency, creating unforgettable memories for clients. This chapter feels like the perfect blend of purpose and possibility, and I can’t wait to see what’s next
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three qualities that had the most impact on my journey were tenacity, coachability, and the willingness to consistently show up for my business.
This industry has the potential to be incredibly powerful and life-changing for those who are open to learning and committed to showing up. However, I’ve seen too many people let fear or emotions take over, leading them to give up before they’ve truly tapped into their potential. Others resist guidance, wanting to “do it their way” instead of leaning in to learn proven strategies for success while still remaining authentic.
My advice? Be fully coachable. Seek out those who are where you want to be, listen to their advice, and trust the process. Stay open to learning, even if it takes you outside your comfort zone.
Show up to your business every day as if it were a job—because it is. The beauty of this industry is the flexibility to fit it into your life, but it still requires consistency and dedication to see results.
And most importantly, don’t give up. Anything worth having takes time, effort, and perseverance. There will be ups and downs, moments of doubt, and times when you stumble. What matters is that you get back up and keep going. Success isn’t a straight path, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you know you’re making a difference in people’s lives.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am absolutely looking for amazing individuals to partner with. Specifically, I’m seeking women who are driven, dedicated, and passionate about making a difference—not just in their own lives but in the lives of others as well.
I’m excited to collaborate with people who are self-motivated, eager to grow, and inspired to leave a positive and lasting impact on those around them. Our team name, Light + Legacy, reflects our mission: to shine a light on each person’s unique strengths and potential while building a legacy of empowerment, growth, and transformation.
The perfect partner for this journey is someone who:
Believes in their ability to create change—for themselves and for others.
Is open to learning and values personal development.
Wants to build something meaningful while enjoying the flexibility to design a life they love.
Seeks to align their work with their values, whether it’s promoting wellness, clean beauty, or creating opportunities for others.
If this resonates with you, let’s connect! Whether you’re looking for a way to create additional income, build a business on your terms, or simply join a community that uplifts and supports each other, I would love to share more about how we can work together.
