We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shannon Pippin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self esteem have come from continuing to push myself outside of my comfort zone. I think letting ourselves stay boxed into our preconceived limits for our lives, who we are & what we can do, is the biggest obstacle in realizing our full potential. Until you face uncertainty, you’ll never feel truly confident in yourself.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
With a background in cosmetology, I’ve always loved helping other people find their beauty. Although I don’t work behind the chair anymore for health reasons, I’ve continued to share tips and products recommendations on my Instagram and TikTok channel, Hippie Pippie Reviews.
Through social media, I’ve been able to connect with more people than I could ever dream of seeing in a salon! When I began, I never would have dreamed that I would be collaborating with brands like Huda Beauty, OSEA, and Lancôme—I’m so excited for an upcoming feature for a just launched fragrance brand, NOYZ.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When it comes to content creation, and honestly any career—your best skill is being willing to make a fool of yourself & keep going. Too many people give up on their dreams because it feels uncomfortable & they arnt instantly perfect at something. Keep going!
Second, always be grateful & gracious. That’s not to say, don’t have boundaries. You absolutely have to be comfortable in your ability to say “no”, but big opportunities sometimes come from unexpected places. I’ve had several projects with small budgets that ended up leading to some of my most profitable collaborations. You never know who the person you’re talking to may work for a year from now, be cautious burning bridges!
Lastly, always remember your worth & respect yourself. In entrepreneurial work, avoiding burn out is essential. Take a break or a mini vacation as often as you can, your work will be better for it when you are recharged.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance has been my biggest challenge, trying to find that balance as someone with chronic illness seems impossible at times. Ehlers-Danlos and POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) are often unpredictable, and not very respectful of deadlines. I’ve had to learn to communicate my needs, ask for help, and let go of my need for perfection.
