We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shannon Rochon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shannon below.
Shannon, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I didn’t find my purpose all at once. It was something I discovered over time by paying attention to what God kept placing in my hands.
For a long time, I was doing a lot of different things, serving in my community, working with young people, leading, creating, and speaking. I used to wonder how it all fit together. But I started to realize that every gift I had was connected by one thing: helping people see their value and use their own gifts to build something meaningful.
My purpose really became clear when I stopped trying to fit into one lane and instead embraced how God designed me. I’m here to inspire people to use their talents to build stronger communities and support one another.
It wasn’t about finding something new. It was about recognizing what had been there all along and choosing to walk in it fully.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I wear a few different hats, but they’re all connected by the same mission. I serve as a school board trustee, I lead a nonprofit focused on civic engagement and community empowerment, and I’m building businesses and creative projects that all center around helping people walk in their purpose.
What’s most exciting to me is the intersection of it all. Whether I’m working in education, organizing in the community, or creating through writing and music, it all comes back to impact. I get to see real change happen, whether that’s a student finding confidence, a community member getting more engaged, or someone realizing they have more in them than they thought.
A big part of my brand is showing that you don’t have to choose just one path. You can be multi-gifted and still be focused, as long as everything you do is rooted in purpose and service. That idea is what led me to write my book, Jack of All Trades, Master of All, where I talk about embracing all of your God-given talents and learning how to steward them with intention.
Right now, I’m especially focused on expanding the work of my nonprofit, BlackCount.org, and continuing to build initiatives that connect mentorship, professional development, and civic engagement. On the creative side, I’m also preparing for the release of my book alongside a music project that brings each chapter to life in a different way, as well as upcoming events where I’ll be able to connect directly with the community.
More than anything, I want people to see that their gifts matter, and that they can use them to create real impact in their families, their communities, and beyond.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I would say the three most impactful things in my journey have been self-awareness, discipline, and faith.
Self-awareness helped me understand who I am and how I’m wired. Once I stopped comparing myself to others and really took the time to recognize my own strengths, I was able to move with more clarity and confidence. My advice to anyone early in their journey is to spend time learning yourself. Pay attention to what comes naturally to you, what people consistently come to you for, and what you feel called to do.
Discipline is what turns potential into results. You can be gifted, but without consistency, those gifts won’t fully develop. I’ve learned that showing up every day, even when you don’t feel like it, is what separates growth from stagnation. Start small, build routines, and stay committed even when the results don’t show up right away.
Faith has been my foundation through it all. There were moments when things didn’t make sense, when doors didn’t open, or when the path wasn’t clear. But trusting God and staying rooted in purpose kept me moving forward. I would encourage anyone to stay grounded in something bigger than themselves, because purpose isn’t just about what you do, it’s about who you are becoming.
If I could leave one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t try to rush the process. Growth takes time, and every stage is preparing you for the next. Stay committed, stay open, and keep building.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has played a major role in my development is actually the one I wrote, Jack of All Trades, Master of All. Writing it forced me to reflect on my own journey in a deeper way than I ever had before.
One of the most impactful lessons from the book is the idea that being multi-gifted is not a weakness, it’s a responsibility. For a long time, society makes you feel like you have to choose one lane, but I’ve learned that your purpose can live at the intersection of your gifts. The key is learning how to steward them with intention.
Another important takeaway is that talent without structure leads to frustration. It’s not enough to be gifted, you have to organize your life, your time, and your focus in a way that allows your gifts to grow and produce results.
And finally, the biggest lesson is understanding that your gifts are not just for you. They’re meant to serve others. When you shift your mindset from self to service, everything you do gains more meaning and impact.
Writing the book helped me put language to things I had been living, and it continues to remind me to stay aligned with purpose, discipline, and service in everything I do.
