Meet Shannon Wiggins

We recently connected with Shannon Wiggins and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

It has become evident to me that love/confidence is not an external entity to be sought but rather a state of being that must first be nurtured internally. While the ability to receive love from others is amazing , the most critical form of love is self-love. Developing a healthy sense of self-worth can address deep-seated insecurities and enable the projection of a positive self-image, thereby fostering healthier interpersonal dynamics. As the saying goes, “confidence is key,” because how you view yourself shapes how the world perceives you. When you embrace confidence, that’s exactly what others will see.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Shannon Wiggins, and I am a twenty-two-year-old creative. Growing up in a deeply prejudiced and racist community shaped my determination to create a space where Black women and our unique beauty could be celebrated unapologetically. Recognizing the lack of representation and support around me, I turned to the digital world and built an online community dedicated to uplifting Black women and challenging societal narratives that often demonize our features.

In November 2024, I began writing poetry and creating music, blending my passion for art with my mission to inspire others. I plan to release my music soon and feature my poetic artistry on my social media platforms—a new chapter in my journey that I’m truly excited about. Through my work, I strive to empower women of color, encouraging us all to embrace our true selves and celebrate our beauty, even in the face of adversity.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I have a background in computer science, which has equipped me with the skills to master Instagram’s algorithm. By applying my knowledge of reverse-engineering platforms and systems, I grew my following from 800 to 300,000 in under a year. My seven years of experience working with natural hair not only deepened my understanding of what natural hair truly is but also helped me create authentic and relatable content that resonates with my audience.

Growing up as the “weird kid,” I quickly realized that being authentic and true to myself was the only option I ever really had. Whenever I tried to fit in or be someone else, it never worked, and when I embraced who I was, there was no category anyone could place me in. My knowledge of natural hair, combined with my individuality, became my greatest strengths. This authenticity, along with my technical expertise and creativity, has allowed me to navigate the digital space effectively, build a powerful platform, and truly connect with my audience.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Over the last 12 years, my biggest area of growth has been understanding that comfort can sometimes hinder progress. I’ve realized that when you’re uncomfortable, you’re driven to work toward a place of ease and improvement, but staying comfortable often limits your willingness to explore new opportunities outside of the norm.

Growing up, I struggled with severe social anxiety. As the “weird kid,” I didn’t have many people to talk to, and even when I did, they rarely saw the real me. However, coming into 2024, I’ve completely transformed this part of myself. I’ve abolished my social anxiety, become more personable, and developed stronger social skills. Now, I’m more confident, socialized, and able to have meaningful conversations with others. This transformation has been a major milestone in my personal growth and self-development.
