Meet Shantal Garcia

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shantal Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shantal below.

Shantal, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose in the beauty industry after years of working for both large corporations and small businesses where my hard work often went unrecognized and under paid. I decided to take a leap of faith and open my own business, where I could value my skills, knowledge, and dedication while creating the work environment I always wanted.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Shantal and I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 10 years. I began my career as a make up artist, later transitioning into the spa world as a receptionist at a luxury hotel. After earning my aesthetician license, I expanded my expertise to perform facials at a hotel spa, med spa, and eventually opening up my own beauty studio. Throughout my career, I have gained experience at variety of settings, often working multiple jobs at once, which has instilled a strong work ethic, determination, and a clear vision for my future. As a bilingual Latina, fluent in both Spanish and English, I have been able to connect with a diverse clientele. My passion for skin care and beauty, combined with my desire for independence, led me to open my own business. Which is now Shantal Skin Studio located inside Sola Salon in Mission Valley. There, I offer facials, lash lifts, brow services, and professional skin care products, while welcoming new clients to experience, personalized treatments in a professional and relaxing environment.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities that have helped me succeed in this industry, are trust, determination and resilience. I never gave up. I’m always willing to learn, and I view constructive criticism as an opportunity to grow. In terms of skills, my biggest strength is maintaining a “forever student “ mindset. No matter how many years I’ve been in the industry, I continue to take classes both online and in person and I make it a priority to attend industry conventions each year. One of the most impactful decisions in my career was choosing skin care brands that value me as a professional, and as a person, not just a source of revenue. I align myself with brands that offer strong educational programs and courses, which have contributed greatly to my growth. For anyone starting out in this field, my advice is to stay humble. Never assume you know more than others, embrace feedback, and remain open to learning new techniques and trends. This industry evolves quickly and the willingness to adapt is what always keeps you thriving to be the best you can be.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I’ve learned that in order to show up fully for my clients and business, I have to take care of myself first. When I start to feel overwhelmed, I make self-care a non negotiable. For me, that means scheduling a monthly massage, practicing meditation, and taking time to enjoy some sun and recharge. I also make sure I have a strong support system, whether that’s friends, family, or my spouse, because this field can feel isolating at times. I truly believe that as an Esthetician, your a lot like a therapist for your clients , and to provide the best care, You need to protect your own well-being.
