Meet Shantel Davis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shantel Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shantel, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by remembering a saying from Dhar Mann. ” When you do what you love, the money will always follow.” So in other words even if I don’t sell my products, I don’t give up on selling, I will keep on advertising them, marketing them until I get potential customers and the right customers. This also motivates me to keep on sewing and designing because there will always be people that are interested in the latest and newest designs. Most customers that I encounter are interested in my latest designs. Above all I keep on going, I keep selling and I keep pushing forward.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Shantel Davis. I am from Miami Florida. I am a Fashion Designer/Seamstress. I started sewing ever since I was 13 years old in Home Economics. Once I started sewing I loved it. It became an addiction. I have always had a passion for Fashion. I also love Art, so I developed the love for drawing and sketching my latest designs. I have tons of portfolios of my latest sketches. Most of the sketches I put them to work. Sewing also runs in my family, My Grandma use to sew, My Mom use to sew and my Aunt use to sew. My Mom use to sew for my older siblings because clothing back in the day were too expensive. So she use to cut and sew any clothing style, she never used a pattern to sew any article of clothing. I started my clothing brand “Colors Are Beautiful” back in October 2, 2012. The reason why I started this clothing line because I sew in colors, all the colors of the rainbow. Without color my clothing will look bland and boring. I also like to use design prints when sewing my clothing to bring them to life and make them look vibrant. My favorite animal print to work with is leopard print in any color to sew my clothing styles. The meaning behind “Colors Are Beautiful” is to make the wearer feel comfortable and confident in what they are wearing. I also design clothes for people in all shapes and sizes because everyone needs clothes. I design clothes for Women, Men and Children. I am working with a Business Coach her name is Hanna Marie Creates and she is helping me how to achieve my sale goals, and to think like a Business owner. She is helping me to see that I am in Business to gain money not lose money.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities are time, effort and patience. You have to have these three because this will help you to become successful in whatever field that you are in. I have to train myself to have patience in sewing and designing and don’t be too quick to give up just because a project that I am working on doesn’t come out right. I always fix my mistakes in sewing to make them look professional. So my advice for others who are starting out their journey in whatever field that they are interested in is, never give up, never second guess yourself and keep pushing forward. The skills that I needed to have is learning how to sew using different sewing machines. When I was in Fashion School I had to learn how to sew with an Industrial Sewing Machine. I quickly developed the skill of sewing using an Industrial Sewing Machine. My next skill I would like to develop is sewing with an Embroidery Machine. I am always a go-getter, never afraid to learn new things. The way to improve on qualities and skills is to keep working on them, never give up. Just keep going.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are my Sisters because they always buy my niche that always sells, My Pajamas Sets and Separates. My Pajamas are the ones that sells out the most. They understand that I need support, I need money to keep my sewing and designing business afloat. They also understand that I need to gain money not lose money. Above all my family members are my faithful clients.
