We recently connected with Shantell Rock and have shared our conversation below.
Shantell, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I’ve always had a passion for things to keep my mind at ease and over the last year, I’ve begun to take my diamond art hobby serious and really put my heart into it. I also enjoy a massage, walks in nature, quality time with family, taking baths, and the occasional cocktail hour. Most importantly, though, I take care of myself by talking to my therapist regularly.
By taking care of myself, it helps me to maintain my focus, dedication, and meditate. I am more efficient in my tasks not only at home, but also at work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
By day, I am a paralegal for a law firm in Washington, D.C. However, I wear many, many hats. I am a board member for the Woodbridge Potomac Community Civic Association, the Deputy Chapter Lead for the State of Virginia for Moms Demand Action, the Domestic Violence Chair for the Phi Kappa Zeta Chapter in Woodbridge, and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Aside from all of those titles, my favorite position is “mother.” I have 2 groups of kids, Group A and Group B. Group A are my 3 biological children, while Group B are my 5 foster and adopted boys. I am community driven so being a foster and adopted mom is near and dear to my heart. I have so many kids that you’d think they have control, but in reality, my GRANDCHILDREN are in the spotlight!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Dedication, empathy, and compassion for humanity were the three things that helped me on my journey.
I believe knowledge is power. Part of being knowledgeable is not only being book smart, but knowing oneself also. Learn as much as you can and begin applying it to your everyday life. Use your life experiences to shape your ideals for the better.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My mother is my rock in all things essential. She taught me to be the woman that I am today. Without her, I wouldn’t be the strong, independent Black woman that I am. She taught me my work ethic, my self-discipline, how to be a parent, how to be successful at a higher education, and most importantly, how to have faith in God.
