We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaquanna Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaquanna, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic most definitely came from my mom. I was raised in a single parent household and my mom always made sure my sister and I had everything we needed. Growing up I watched my mom maintain a full time job while also keeping a side hustle. I remember when I was a little girl she would work her primary job during the day and after she would take me with her to clean buildings. Helping her clean the buildings was something I enjoyed. It was “work” but it was also me spending time with my mom. Those experiences with my mom at a young age were the building blocks to my work ethic and character that you see today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born in New York but my mom moved to Charlotte when I was 1. I am a wife and a proud mother to my beautiful daughter Naomi. I enjoy creating new memories and experiences. I love having fun times with my family and friends. I am a free spirit and I believe that life is to be lived to the fullest.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Determination, humility, and self- confidence. The journey of entrepreneurship will come with many challenges. There were times that I battled with the thought of giving up but I was determined to build something I could call my own. To anyone going into business for themselves the best advice that I can give is know that things are going to happen that are out of your control but always believe in yourself and your abilities. Remain humble so that you can have a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. The reward is so much greater than the fight so no matter how many times you get knocked down always get back up!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would have to say my mentor Candace Holyfield also known as the Six Figure Spa Chick. Candace has truly been an inspiration and blessing to me along my journey. She has opened up my mind up to new ways of thinking. She continuously provides me with the tools and resources I need in order to be successful. She leaves me feeling empowered, encouraged, and supported to use those tools to get me to where I desire in my industry.
