Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharon Bonner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sharon, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I believe my optimism is rooted in gratitude. I am a very grateful person, and I am always giving thanks for even the smallest things in life, I believe this way of thinking brings upon a mind shift. I am solution focused kind of person, not a fixer. I firmly believe that if a problem arises or a situation is not to my liking that the solution resides within me. I have realized that we all have the power to create the life that we want or desire.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My life has been a journey in creativity, beginning in childhood up to adulthood I have been involved in the arts, whether it was writing, acting, crafting, photography and now visual arts. In February of this year, I began I created an LLC for my art. I have been painting since 2013 and I began selling my creations since 2015.
I have always wanted to elicit joy through my paintings. The overall theme of my work is the exploration of florals more recently I have been using historical and ancestral references in my paintings. This year I also received my certification in Prompt engineering which is also known as A.I., which has added a new tool in creativity. This fall I will be releasing a body positive coloring book. In September I will be showing new pieces at the Women of Color Exhibition: Women’s Empowerment show put on by the art collective “We are Indy Art” at the Central Library in Indianapolis, IN, In October I will be selling small works of art and crafts at the Lodge in Irvington, hosted by Yasha Perrson and in November on First Friday, I will be at Hampton & Co., which is a home decor shop in Irvington In. Closing the year, I will be selling small art pieces in my online shop, sharonlbonnerart.square.site.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
What has been impactful in my journey is having a deep love for the arts and creating. I make it a point to carve out time each day to do something creative. It is crucial to build a practice. For years I would make it a point to paint every day. Doing something creative to me could be watching a video on You Tube about artist I admire, researching new materials, saving creative pictures on Pintrest, going to art shows etc. I am very knowledgeable in art history, and I do a lot of research on tools and techniques and different styles of art. Overall, staying the course has been the most impactful in my journey.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When feeling overwhelmed, I take a step back and rest. I rest my mind and body, and I make it a point not to force anything. My advice is to take your time and do things in small steps and chunks until the mission is completed, all the while giving yourself grace and room for thought and mistakes.
