Meet Sharon Farnell

We were lucky to catch up with Sharon Farnell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sharon, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

I guess you could say I got my self discipline skills back when I was in college. I worked full time, and went to school as well, and I really wanted to finish and do well. I had to stay up late nights working on creative projects, then go to work the next day. I just kept my eye on the prize and kept pushing.

Once I started working in a creative field after graduation, I kept that persistence and drive, and very much needed it at the small demanding companies I worked for.

These days, working for myself, I still keep a great schedule and stay very disciplined, but I have learned to leave room for myself to take a break and breathe every once in a while.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Recipe Blogger, and owner of jawsicooked.com, as well as a Graphic Designer. I started my own business this year to include both endeavors, and things are going great!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

If I had to choose three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey, the first thing that comes to mind is a quote from Winston Churchill that has always stuck with me: ““Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”

If you can’t take a few failures, and learn from them to make yourself and your business better, you’ll have a hard time making a go of it on your own in business, or in my opinion, life.

Success comes to those who want it; and a good sense of what you want, how to get it, and not losing your optimism along the way are crucial to pushing forward.

Never give up, never lose your enthusiasm, and hold tight to why you’re doing it in the first place. Persistence is key. As well as dedication and drive.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

If I start to feel overwhelmed and am lacking drive and creativity, I’ll usually hit the reset button and take a day to experience something new and fun, whether it be a quick lunch with a friend, a trip to a park, or cooking up a new recipe I’ve always wanted to try my hand at.

Stepping outside of the day-to-day really helps me gain perspective, and get back on track. Sometimes your brain needs a little refresh.
