We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharon Hess a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding our purpose has everything to do with self -actualization. The more we know ourselves the more we are positioned to find the peace, love, joy, and abundance we can here to experience. I worked a lot on self-improvement as I was always drawn to understanding myself.
Most of my life I followed my gut and aimed for the most pleasant experiences I could find within a situation and I tried to let go of things that didn’t serve me and find things that did. When I was forty I found A Course In Miracles and it changed my life forever, and definitely for the better. I learned how to look at my purpose in life from a higher perspective.
I’ve also looked at my horoscope, human design, hand analysis, and Akashic Records as I was seeking something, some answers to what my purpose being here was. Everything pointed to the same answer “Spiritual Teacher.” Of course, my human side was reluctant to own such a title, although I’ve come to learn it really doesn’t mean so much as living it day to day and sharing what I’ve learned,,. what I understand.
Because we are all mind/body/soul, bringing them into harmony is what brings us the happiness that we all seek. On a high esoteric level, our Spiritual Purpose is to remember that we are connected to God, Universe, Our Creator, The Creator of All That Is, whatever you may call it. Our human purpose is how we express our gifts into this world and share them with others. The most helpful for me was learning about the Akashic Records and how our soul stories can help us energetically in our everyday lives. I now use that in my practice and see the profound difference it can make in knowing who we are on a soul level because it is a part of our purpose for being here.
Finding our purpose is a path that unfolds as we discover ourselves and the world around us and how we relate to it. I’ve always loved the saying “It’s about the journey and not the goal.” Now that I help others with their life’s journey and discover their purpose and how they express it in this world, I am putting my purpose to what I believe is good use! Our purpose and our soul-level gifts never change, but the way we express them does.
In closing, our Spiritual Practice (whatever that is for you) brings us closer to our high-level purpose…
knowing as much as we can about ourselves brings us closer to our earthly day-to-day purpose.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these? 1. One of my biggest qualities has always been a good sense of humor. If you can learn not to take yourself too seriously and laugh at yourself it will serve you well in life and business. It’s easy to develop your own sense of humor by learning to put things in perspective. Ask yourself will this matter 100 years from now? Probably not, so look at as a gift, something you experienced to learn from. Learn to laugh at yourself when it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things …
2. A skill that I developed (that was really always there it was more a matter of acknowledging it in order to develop it) was looking at things from different perspectives. I learned in sales it is really about them, not you, so you need to look at from their perspective as well as your own. You are not in the world alone and there is a reason for that! Opinions can change and what you believe can change, so don’t get stuck on wanting to be right at the cost of losing your happiness!
3. My knowledge of all things spiritual came to the forefront when I discovered A Course In Miracles when I was 40. From that point on I learned to look at this world through different eyes. If you are reading this you have probably had a pivotal moment in your life that helped define you moving forward, or you WILL have one, I promise. Just pay attention to what is showing up in your life. The Universe always guides us and it’s not about punishing, it’s about enlightening us. Sometimes what we think is awful if just a redirection to something much better, so try not to judge things until the entire story unfolds. Remember that anything can define us if we allow it, so you get to choose what defines you.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
A Course In Miracles was and continues to have the most impact. The beginning says “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
Sounds simple yet there are hundreds of pages to explain it and help you heal at the mind level.
My absolute favorite saying within is “Teach only love for that is what you are.” Another is the idea we only receive one of two things from anyone,…it’s either love or a call for love… and we return love to both.
