We were lucky to catch up with Sharpie J recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharpie , you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from the idea that we should be better people. Something as simple as holding a door or complimenting someone, just a simple act of kindness and generosity can completely change someone’s outlook on life the smallest gestures make the biggest impact, and the smallest voices make the loudest noise.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Michigan based hip hop artist, I’ve been on 2 tours, have opened for names like Juicy J, DJ Paul, Stevie Stone, and Godemis of Ces Cru. I have officially released 2 albums, 1 EP, 1 Mixtape and few extra songs and features. Total I probably have about 50 plus songs out. I do all my own recording, mixing, and mastering. I’ve loved Rapping for as long as I’ve been able to speak. What excites me the most and keep me passionate is that feeling when you make a new song or your performing in front of a crowd there’s this feeling you get where it’s like you get on this high. You feel lighter and your adrenaline is up and you feel like you can rule the world but shortly after, that feeling goes away and you keep chasing that feeling it’s like an addiction almost. No matter how much I could eant to quit, I never could I’ll always be a writer I’ll always make music it’s ingrained in me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For Rapping there’s a few things.
1. Be true to who you are don’t try to be any one your not. There’s a lot of people who will try to take advantage of you so be smart with how you move. Don’t compromise yourself.
2. Practice, practice, practice, hone your craft, sharpen your skills, study and gain knowledge.
3. Money isn’t everything.
This game is very money driven every aspect of being a musician cost money but don’t ruin your life because you over spent. Be smart with your investments and don’t throw your money at every opportunity take the time to make sure it’s the right opportunity.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle is self motivation. I’ve only ever done this music thing independently with no one’s help other than people getting me on shows. But as far as the learning and growing as an artist, it has always just been myself. And that guy gets lazy sometimes and doesn’t take care of himself the best. One thing I do to try to combat this is make a plan even if I only accomplish one thing I take that as a win. And just do my best live life like today might be my last
