We recently connected with Shauneille Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Shauneille, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Shauneille is a native of New Jersey that remembers the embarrassment of being at Walmart counting her change to pay for her groceries. While in Walmart, Shauneille observed a long line of onlookers that restless sighs got louder and louder with each coin.
Behind Shauneille stood a man & his son that sighed repeatedly & loudly while Shauneille took her coins out of her change purse. The man firmly told his son to shut up & looked in Shauneille’ direction & told her to take her time.
Throughout Shauneille’s career, she got tired of being asked to serve on multiple boards to communicate her ideas. But when she applied for a better position that would better compensate Shauneille for her ideas; she was repeatedly told no.
Finally, Shauneille eyes became open if she wanted change. Shauneille would have to change her actions to a more effective system to see the results that she saw was possible. Shauneille began to aim higher by researching her options, assessing the direction that would be fulfilling & financially accommodating.
Today Shauneille enjoys her career. Shauneille’s concentrated focus has produced what she saw possible back then because where you are willing to put in the work. There will be growth.–
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

What do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey?
Three qualities that have been impactful in my process to progress is my hunger for more.
Never settle for status quo.
I have always sensed that I have value to impact all that I encounter and the curiosity to learn what I don’t know.
What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Knowing who you are and the value you bring to every given situation is imperative to make it in this competitive world. You were born an original. Never become a duplicator. Duplicators are often replaced. Originals are always sought after. When starting your process to progress. Always pay attention to those who can see in you what isn’t apparent.
When you invest in sharpening who you are and know your life purpose. You waste less time and money on things that do not matter.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I grew up in a multi-cultured neighborhood in New Jersey. I remember walking down the street having a man yell out his window aren’t you in the wrong neighborhood!!! This comment provoked the ongoing question of why?
As a little girl I have always questioned why? Why are certain communities nicer than others?
Why does it appear that certain rules that appear to be wrong or in favor of others? Why are there disparities in educational & opportunities?
Growing up my parents taught me helping your fellow man is always profitable. They would share our food with our neighbors. My dad always had a vision of what could be done or what’s possible with what he saw. My mom has always been strategic and implementing how to make it happen.
My parents would share our clothes with other less fortunate families. Not that we were rich or had a lot. But because my parents cared about people. They always felt that if you share what you have God will always provide more.
For it’s not what you have, But it is what you do with what you have. My parents became the resource in the community.
Rather than complain about what is they chose to use their gifting to provide for our family and the community.
As a result, through life experiences, my parents, teaching, personal triumphs and failures assisted in developing my personal truths.
I began to pay attention to the pattern’s in my career. I got tired of being asked to serve on multiple boards to communicate my ideas. But when I applied for a better position that would better compensate me for her ideas; I was repeatedly told no.
Finally, my eyes became open if I wanted change. I would have to change my actions to a more effective system to see the results that she saw was possible. I began to aim higher by researching my options, assessing the direction that would be fulfilling & financially accommodating.
My concentrated focus has exceeded what I saw possible back then because where you are willing to put in the work. There will be growth.
