Meet Shaunice Cherelle

We were lucky to catch up with Shaunice Cherelle recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shaunice, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

In the beginning, I would experience creativity blockage either when I was on a time crunch or when things were forced- which I was able to maneuver through with patience. Then, I began noticing that I would have blockage and lack of motivation/interest when creating started to feel like a job. At that point, I learned that just straight grinding doesn’t work for me so finding balance helped. Whenever I’m doing my thing, I push myself to a healthy extent and then stop everything completely to take time away, recharge and come back with a fresh canvas. I think first identifying all of my blockers and seeing what works for me was a major key.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am an independent R&B singer, songwriter and producer. I’m an old soul at heart and I like to sprinkle some of that soul into my music along with a touch of Hip Hop/Rap. With my new album CULTIV8’D, you’d definitely get a blended feel of all in one- from R&B to rap, soul, party and jazz. It’s literally something on there for everyone! What I feel is most exciting and special about my music career is that everything comes natural to me and it’s so much fun when I’m in my zone. Especially writing, I’d have to say that’s probably the funnest part of it all aside from performing. I started singing and writing very young and I’ve always known that this was going to be my path in life. I still have to pinch myself now because I’m beginning the life I prayed for!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I would say learning patience, finding balance and discovering fully who I am were absolutely the most pivotal parts of my journey. It’s not a race and there are no rules. We all have our own paths in life that comes with our own set of battles and victories and I have overcome so much in mine so far. The best advice to the ones that are early in their journey or even the ones that have been on their journey and are still enduring, I’d say take your time. There is time, don’t listen to the outside who try to make you think that there isn’t any! No one is God. Do what you do best, as best as you can and when you get to moments that you can’t, take a break. It’s ok to rest. We’re not robots. Your journey is yours and if no one else understands it, it doesn’t matter, they’re not supposed to. You don’t owe anything to anyone but yourself. Stand 10 toes on what you believe is yours. Period.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely, I love meeting new creatives! I have been solo throughout my journey but now I am ready for a team of like minded people like me who are genuine, fun and of course talented in their craft. Musicians are at the top of my list at the moment but I’m definitely open to connecting with other songwriters! Business wise, I have been silently scouting partners that I could work closely with regarding branding, promoting, etc. to help push the music. So, just letting everything align as they may right now until these opportunities come.
