Meet Shawn Crystal

We were lucky to catch up with Shawn Crystal recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawn, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My optimism is learned. After years of struggle and negative thinking, I realized I had become my own obstacle. Through some self help books, yoga, and mediation, I learned to look at the positive side of things and that happiness was a choice. These days I am happy and focused!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am Shawn Crystal, an artist and teacher. I have worked as a freelancer for Marvel Comics and DC comics for the past 15 years. I have also spent the past five year swiping to a more entrepreneurial mindset, working to make my business work in its own, without freelance, so I can fully commit to my creative vision and goals. On this journey, I have also learned to tattoo. Currently, I am ruled by optimism and curiosity.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Focus. Practice. Determination.
Choose your course of action but be flexible with the challenges that come along the way. The path to your vision may not come as you envisioned it, but it will get you to your goal.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

Doing exactly what I’m doing now!
