We were lucky to catch up with Shawn Weir recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shawn, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from watching my mom work multiple jobs to provide for me and my siblings. Seeing her dedication and resilience made a deep impact on me. Additionally, knowing my dad’s story—how he came to this country on a work visa with the dream of building a better life—taught me that nothing is given to you without hard work. These experiences have been the driving force behind my determination and work ethic
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own a clothing brand called Good Vibez, which is focused on sparking conversations around mental health. Beyond that, I founded a non-profit organization called House of Vibez. It’s the engine behind the brand, working to build a community where mental health is a priority. We’ve also launched a podcast to reach a broader audience, sharing the stories of everyday people and their journeys. Additionally, I’m a photographer. I started doing photography because I believe that pictures are everlasting; they often serve as reminders of how good someone felt in a moment, and I want to be the person who helps capture that feeling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities and skills that have been impactful on my journey are resilience, an entrepreneurial mindset, and creative expression. My work ethic, which was shaped by watching my parents’ dedication and sacrifices, has been a driving force in everything I do. This resilience has helped me push through challenges and continue building my businesses and pursuing my passions. Having an entrepreneurial mindset has allowed me to identify opportunities and create initiatives like Good Vibez and House of Vibez, which align with my values and goals, especially in advocating for mental health. Additionally, my ability to express myself creatively, whether through my clothing brand, non-profit work, or photography, has been essential in connecting with people, sparking important conversations, and sharing stories that resonate with others.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been understanding how to pace myself and realizing that I don’t have to have everything figured out right away. I used to spend a lot of time trying to ‘beat the clock’ on the goals I wanted to achieve by a certain age, but I’ve learned that it’s a process. Everything starts with baby steps, which eventually turn into walking and then running. This mindset shift has helped me approach my goals with more patience and perspective.
