We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shawna Fletcher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shawna, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a creative individual, I nurture my imagination through a variety of avenues. Immersing myself in a diverse range of literature, spanning from fiction to non-fiction, fuels my creativity. Additionally, I find inspiration in movies across all genres. My dreams also play a significant role in sparking creativity, with scenes sometimes evolving into full-fledged novels or recurring dreams featuring unforgettable characters.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a romance author who believes in the power of books to reignite love. My characters are imperfect, facing real-life challenges, trauma, and obstacles, yet they find love unexpectedly. I have released two romance novels, ‘Pull of the Moon’ and ‘Unseen Scars,’ each exploring unique themes and tropes while emphasizing the enduring and transformative nature of love. Currently, I am working on the sequel to ‘Unseen Scars,’ deeply attached to the characters I created and unable to part with them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been beneficial on my journey are resilience, persistence, and adaptability. As a new author sharing deeply personal work with the public, these qualities will help you remain unfazed when someone doesn’t resonate with your work and understand that there are many others who will connect with it and seek more.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
In the past twelve months my biggest area of growth has been my ability to pivot and set certain things aside. I started writing a manuscript that was deeply important to me but wasn’t beneficial to my mental health. Every time I sat down to write, I would become depressed and angry. Ultimately, I decided to shelf the idea for a while and return to the writing that improves my mental health, which is romance.
