Meet Shayla Cobbs

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shayla Cobbs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shayla , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I truly believe my purpose found me! I’ve always had a passion for the beauty industry even as a little girl. I loved being pretty and making others pretty as well. When I was in high school I would always write about being a cosmetologist. I would arch eyebrows in the girls restroom in the mornings after drill team practice. I always loved makeup and skin care. No one had to introduce those things to me.

When I graduated high school, I was persuaded to become an educator because my parents couldn’t see the vision of a career in beauty. I think about that time period often and I wish I would’ve fought for my dream a little harder. If I ever have a child I would definitely encourage them to pursue their passion/natural talents.

After graduation, I went on to college and graduated with a degree in education and that’s where I stayed for 14 years! My time as an educator shaped me as a professional. I appreciate the skills I acquired during that time. Around my 11th/12th year teaching, I decided it was time to finally do what I wanted to do! Teaching was okay but I was DONE! I no longer enjoyed it. Around that time I started getting lash extensions. I loved them! I asked my lash tech if she makes a decent living and she said yes! That night I went home and enrolled myself in a lash extension course and the rest is history! I’ve been on my beauty journey ever since!

This was back in 2018. I’ve enjoyed creating my lane in the beauty industry. I’m doing everything I love to do! My dream of being in the beauty business came true!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I would say the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are optimism, professionalism, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Optimism has helped me stay focused and motivated, even during challenging times, reminding me to always see opportunities rather than obstacles. Professionalism has allowed me to build trust with clients, deliver consistent results, and establish a reputation for excellence. Lastly, being a lifelong learner has been crucial to my growth, as it keeps me informed about the latest trends, techniques, and advancements in the beauty industry.

For those just starting out, I’d advise you to embrace these qualities. Stay optimistic by focusing on your goals and surrounding yourself with supportive people. Prioritize professionalism, because how you conduct yourself can be just as important as the services you provide. And always remain curious and willing to learn. The beauty industry is constantly evolving, so investing in your education will set you apart and help you stay ahead of the curve.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Rather than a single person, I would say the entire spa and beauty community has been instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and develop the skills I needed to succeed. Connecting with other professionals—whether through workshops, networking events, or online communities—has provided invaluable insights and support. I’ve learned so much from others who share their experiences, offer advice, and celebrate each other’s successes. The collective wisdom and encouragement from this community have helped me stay motivated, refine my skills, and continue growing in my craft. I’m grateful to be part of such a collaborative and inspiring industry.
