We were lucky to catch up with Shayla M. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Shayla with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up I was raised in a single parent house hold. Watching my mom care for two children on her own while still maintaining a job and taking care of us let me know that even when things get rough you can push through it. In life there will always be moments or days when we don’t “feel like it” but we owe it to ourselves to keep pushing forward. Nobody is going to give you a hand out and the best reward is knowing you were able to make a way out of nothing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a licensed nail tech with a love for elegant, healthy nails. I focus on services like waterless pedicures, Russian manicures, and acrylic enhancements because I believe nail art should be beautiful and safe for your nail health. When I’m not in the studio, I’m sharing what I’ve learned with other nail techs through my YouTube channel, my e-books, and soon on Patreon, where I’ll be posting tutorials and behind-the-scenes content.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being relatable, knowledgeable in your craft and being bendable when it comes to the forever changing trends/social media has made the most impact on my journey! My advice to anyone stepping into the beauty industry or feeling “stuck” is to be like water! This industry is forever changing and we have to be able to flow through every season. Your clients are coming to you for your personality, your work and your atmosphere. Never change your core but be as flexible as possible when it comes to the forever changing trends and stay up to-date on social media!

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One book that has stuck with me is Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson. Remember when I said be like water? This book highlights the importance of always acknowledging and accepting that times and circumstances change and we mustn’t stay stagnant. To be a successful entrepreneur when one door closes you must work through the maze until you find one that opens. It may be tiring or scary but as long as you keep moving you’re already one step closer to your goal.
