Meet Shea

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shea a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

SHEA, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

Sometimes when I have writers block I try to make room to play with creativity. It doesn’t have to be with music. It could be painting or playing dress up in my closet. I also love a good assignment. So if I have nothing to write about, I’ll do a writing challenge and ask my audience on instagram to vote on a theme and for words I have to use in the song. It helps me flex that writing muscle without having to stress myself out about writing something about my life.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m an independent r&b, neosoul artist. I find the songwriting process to be the most exciting part of creating music. I love to sing and perform, but putting words and melodies to my life is so cathartic. And I hope that when people listen to my music they can really feel those emotions and relate the lyrics to their own personal journeys. I like to think I create music that could be the soundtrack to your life. Songs that you can play while cleaning your house, after a break up, or going on a drive. In the past year I released my 2nd ep, In Bloom. A peek into the diary of my journey of personal growth as a lover, friend, daughter, and late twenty something trying to figure out life. This project was two years in the making and is out on all streaming platforms. I am very proud of it and excited for as many people to hear it as possible.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I am currently a teacher, and I honestly think my experience as a teacher has helped so much in my stage presence and my ability to listen and empathize. I think being able to see situations from multiple perspectives allows me to be a better songwriter. As well as always being a student of my craft. I think it’s so important to never stop learning and being curious. My advice to someone just starting out is to say yes to as many opportunities as you can and to always be reflective along the way. The more you document your journey, the easier it is to believe in yourself because the proof is in the pudding.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with other artists and songwriters. I love writing for myself, but there’s a different satisfaction that comes from helping someone else communicate their story. I would also love to collaborate with more producers in the creation of my own music. If you’re reading this and feel we can help each other, you can find me on instagram @shea_musique.
