Meet Sheena Schield

We recently connected with Sheena Schield and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sheena, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I was born with an I will prove you wrong attitude. I was born in Greeley Colorado and raised in the Christian church. I went to school at the same place we attended church. My entire life up until 9th grade was the same home, family, friends every single day with a few vacations and adventures in between. I was always told what to say, how to think and how to live. I craved more my entire childhood. I always had so many questions. I was always so
Curious about other people, neighbors, strangers, cultures. I was kept in a small bubble and had so many people telling me I couldn’t do so many things I was curious about. Girls can’t do that, you’re too young , you’ll never have enough money. When I hit 15 years old I broke away from it all. I stopped going to the church I’d known my whole life and started questioning everything. I was learning to find myself , I had no idea what I wanted or who I was. I graduated a year early and started beauty school as soon as I turned 18. I received a Pell grant that covered almost the entire cost of my tuition. I moved out on my own at the same time and worked as well as went to school. I don’t know why or how I picked it but I thought it would be a trade that could quickly start providing for an independent life and in ten months I had my cosmetology license and found my first job at an aveda salon in town. I learned so much about the industry in such a short time at this location. I wasn’t fitting in well and ended up being fired. I was humiliated and didn’t fully understand why they didn’t see how eager I was , or how hard I was trying, and why they weren’t vibing with me. I had to prove them wrong. I had to prove to everyone and myself that they were wrong and went out the very same day and got another position at a local salon. I’ve worked at many salons across the front range over my 25 year career. Every salon experience has made me grow but it’s come with alot of growing pains. There’s always someone there to sow the most positive seeds and there’s always someone that’s ready to tear it down. I pull so much strength and forgiveness from my clients. They see and feel the energy of a space and team. Clients are so vulnerable and Kind and they can also cause havoc in your life. Bad reviews, unrealistic expectations, boundary issues and some people can just be horrible customers. You have to learn to protect your space and energy, you have to understand and maintain healthy boundaries. For every client I’ve ever lost or hasn’t come back to me for whatever reason the universe has always sent me someone better suited. You see a pattern overtime of overcoming these obstacles. Whether it be a skill, relationship, work ethic, values,,,, etc where ever you work, whoever your spending time with, whoever is sitting in your salon chair, should be growing, should be positive, should emote everything that fills your cup and makes you your best self. That doesn’t mean it’s not going to come without a little heartache, humility, and loss along the way . Im so blessed to have chosen this career and choosing to not give up has brought me My greatest blessings in life. My husband and father of two children was my client. I was blessed with a kidney transplant from a client. Some of closest friends were my clients. The way you treat people and yourself matters. Customer service matters , kindness matters, punctuality matters, cleanliness matters but our health and energy is all we have. Protect it and take pride in the people you are taking care of. Sow seeds to everyone that crosses your path and yes give people their power back by making them feel beautiful. INSPIRE EDUCATE CREATE

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I recently started booth renting out Hella Fresh Hair in old town ft collins. I will have been in this location for a year in January. Such a beautiful space with great energy. I specialize in intuitive haircuts and have a wide array of clientele. I am a color specialist and also dabble in wedding and special occasion hair as well !

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Communication, gaining confidence , and consistency

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Joy Douglas. She was my boss at a commission salon in boulder a lifetime ago. She has since passed. My time at this salon was epic. I honestly could probably write an entire book about the life experiences and lesson I learned at this salon. Joy taught me how to sale, how to make people fall in love with you, how to make good money, color theory. She gave me bigger opportunities with managerial and inventory responsibilities. She pushed me completely out of my comfort zone and hands down own every ounce of Confidence from my time with her. She is missed!
