Meet Sheila Burns-Owens

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sheila R. Burns-Owens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sheila, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I witness both my father and mother’s work ethics and I feel that it was passed on to their children and grandchildren as the fabric of our lives. Even as a retired person I have not stopped. I started my own business, I work out almost daily, I have traveled to all 50 states, and now I am in the process of having my memoir published.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Sheila R. Burns-Owens and I am the creator and owner of #Her2ndStitch. I started #Her2ndStitch after retiring as an educator. #Her2ndStitch produces unique handcrafted string quilted pillows with back pockets. My pillows are made with various fabrics (often African prints), textures, shapes, and sizes. A percentage of the proceeds of all pillows are donated to a shelter for women and their children. I am an ordained associate minister at First Baptist Church of Teaneck. I am also the mother of two amazing adult children who live in North Carolina and Virginia. I am also a grandmother of three. I have been married over 43 years.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back I realized that #Her2ndStitch became a reality because of much prayer, faith, and determination. My advice to others is that the moment is now… I personally don’t want any would-ofs, should-ofs, or could-ofs in my life. You can accomplish anything that you truly put forth the effort no matter how long it takes.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I often feel overwhelmed because of my impulsiveness. I pack my calendar and my daily agenda. But I have learned through therapy and yoga to pause, to self reflect, and also that it is okay to say no, even to myself. I took a 6 week mindfulness course that reminds me to be present and focused. I now know how to not multitask and also how to destress. Always remember that you are worthy and deserving.
