Meet Sheila Nazarian

We were lucky to catch up with Sheila Nazarian recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sheila, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When I was 7 years old, my family escape from Iran through the desert into Pakistan. My parents did not see a future for women. Under the Islamic Republic rule and decided the Iran was not a place for their 2 daughters to thrive. So they planned our escape and left everything they had built behind. When I think back on the sacrifices that my parents made just to give their 2 daughters a chance, I cannot help but be resilient in their honor. I have three children, run 3 businesses, have a decent online following, and try to inspire others to speak up every day. There is a lot going on. But all of this is a pleasure and I am so grateful for the opportunity to succeed and thrive regardless of sex, religion, or race here in America. Looking at my sister’s in Iran, they don’t have that chance. How can I not make the most of the opportunities so many take for granted here in America?

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am so many things. A wife, a mother, and yes, a plastic surgeon too. I used to think the plastic surgeon part was the coolest or the most impressive. But, no. Being a mother and a keeping a healthy and happy household is the coolest. Just putting that out there first and foremost in case young women are reading this. Don’t give up the joy and gratification of family for your career. The whole boss babe myth is a lie. Nothing beats family. Now with that said, let’s get into career. I was always good at art, math and science. I loved building things. I eventually found my way to plastic surgery which was the marriage of everything I loved and was good at. I started my practice 10 years ago, and built the clientele and office of my dreams. It’s a constant shift and pivot every year. My Netflix show launched three years ago to much acclaim with a People’s Choice and Emmy nomination. I was able to educate about both surgical and non-surgical technological advancements, as well as dive into the real reasons why regular people decide to undergo aesthetic enhancements. It was a dream come true. I display and educate mostly on Instagram at @drsheilanazarian, @themodelsurgeon, @spa26, and @theskinspot.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Follow through. Most people don’t follow through. 2. Curiosity. Continuous learning and educational curiosity.
3. Outside the box thinking. Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Believe in yourself and follow your gut.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one challenge I am facing is workforce. After the pandemic, people don’t seem as motivated to perform. We started seeing “quiet quitting” and employees doing the bare minimum. Finding a talented and motivated workforce is my most difficult challenge currently. I am becoming g more involved in the day-to-day running of the office again. I find that my physical presence and personal encouragement is motivating. I want to believe in my staff, but maybe my pulling away from the daily tasks to conquer more big picture goals has had a negative effect….
