Meet Shelby H.

We were lucky to catch up with Shelby H. recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shelby, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome has been no easy feat and to be honest, while few and far between, I still have moments of self doubt. When you’re creating a new path for yourself while following what you’ve been called to do it’s tough to not to feel like an imposter. You’re in uncharted territory and at times you’re navigating only with what you’ve gained thus far in the journey. Working with clients on areas where I myself was a work in progress made me question my ability to serve. Why would anyone want to listen to me? Then I realized, my experience and wisdom has value even if I’m not at the finish line.

After growing up with years of hormonal acne and imbalances, I found healing through new holistic wellness routines and lifestyle habits. Fast forward to opening Happie Human Wellness- I was faced with multiple challenges and life stressors that negatively impacted my health and consequently, my skin. I had entered a new season that required me to be front facing for my company while experiencing the most severe acne of my lifetime. I was the owner of a new non toxic wellness/facial studio who felt as though I had nothing to offer solely because of how I looked. I had become so overwhelmed by life circumstances that I lost track of the routines and practices that had served me through my initial healing journey. Throughout my first year of business I kept reminding myself that the healer needs healing too. Even though I was working through the same obstacles as some of my clients, I recognized that my understanding of their concerns through my own experience is the exact reason why I was trusted as their provider.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a conventional facialist, turned Integrative Esthetician and Lifestyle Coach. After years of working in a traditional medspa I opened Happie Human Wellness. I specialize in buccal massage as well as a whole body approach to healing the skin from the inside out. I provide my clients with products and treatments that align with my mission and transform their skin. In our fast paced, quick fix world consumers are bombarded by clever marketing and covert motives from the beauty/ wellness industry. With an abundance of options and conflicting information, it’s difficult for consumers to decipher the good from the bad. Day after day we are met with new studies of the latest health crisis impacting women; growing infertility rates, hormonal imbalances, endocrine dysfunction, nervous system dysregulation, heavy metal toxicity and the list goes on. Enter Happie Human Wellness- a non toxic wellness studio that offers good- for- you treatments and guidance to navigate wellness beyond powerful marketing tactics. The ultimate goal is to heal and educate women about ingredients and practices that improve skin health and overall wellbeing. After all, health is wealth and knowledge is power. Every woman should feel empowered to make informed decisions that will positively impact themselves and the generations to come.

I’m currently working on workshop/ masterclass style events to bring to my community! The goal is to educate women on how to navigate the grocery store while sorting through misleading labels and clever marketing as well as how to build your plate at home to fuel and nourish from the inside out!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Insatiable curiosity- I have always had the desire to learn as much as I can about anything that sparks my interest. When the impact of ingredients & lifestyle habits on wellbeing crossed my radar, I knew I was embarking on a lifelong pursuit.

2. To be of service- As someone who was able to find healing through holistic practices after being negatively impacted by conventional medicine, I knew I needed to share my experience and create a space to facilitate intentional healing.

3. Consistency- I walk and talk the lifestyle that I promote because putting in the metaphorical “reps” has proven time and time again to bring lasting change. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about putting forth your best effort day in and day out and trust the process even when you can’t quite see the progress.

For those who are early in their journey, think of a challenging time in your life that was pivotal to who you are today. Our pain points are usually our teachers and turn out to be an area where we can be of service to others. When life presents you with obstacles, be curious and open about what it is meant to teach you. Show up for yourself and remember small consistent steps add up over time.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

My Top 2 Strategies for When I’m Feeling Overwhelmed
1. Reorient: ground myself (establish connection with the earth/ physically stabilize) & identify something I can see, hear & smell or taste
2. Breath work: box breathing or the physiological sigh
box breathing: inhale 4 secs, hold 4 secs, exhale 4 secs, hold 4 secs repeat
physiological sigh: take a deep breath in through your nose, at the top of the inhale take another sip of air in through your nose. exhale through your mouth through an audible sigh. repeat

These techniques help to activate your parasympathetic nervous system switching your body from fight/ flight to rest & digest.
