We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shena Ramnarine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shena below.
Hi Shena , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from growing up an a home of 6. Because I moved a lot growing up, we learned life skills at a young age and was held responsible for our actions very early. As kids we tend to figure out what we’re good at and that confidence in self helps build the foundation of resiliency. In my later years, early 20s, I joined the military and really leaned on that foundational resiliency seeing as how there was a lot of overcoming obstacles, moving, deployments and different work environments, being adaptable helped with the many transitions.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I was born on the island of Trinidad & Tobago, grew up in Miami, Fl and have since traveled the world by way of the Military, serving for 20 years. Growing up I always did things a little different, maybe because of my cultural upbringing, always moving or having a big family, but my friends have always told me “I walk to the beat of my own drum” so wanting to start my own business was once again me doing something that was off the beaten path but suites me well. Taking the path less traveled is very much a signature part of my personality, I’ve always known I would start my own business, what specific business though, that wasn’t clear until 2023 when I stumbled upon government contracting. And there is where the story and my entrepreneurial journey begins. It’s also where the impossible has become possible, I can now spend time with my family which is top priority while building a thriving business. My next adventure is to Launch a Coaching division and expand the brand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities and skills most impactful in my journey is focused action (knowing what you want to do and doing it. Drive and motivation (hold on to your vision, it fuels the fire of who you are and makes the journey of business more fun, knowing that ups and down are all part of learning any new skill). Understanding my own strengths and areas of expertise, then leveraging that in an industry can use those skills.
My advise to folks early in the journey of entrepreneurship, use the skill you’ve already attained in life to the advantage of the business, leave room for and schedule fun time as part of the business, because at times you may get so focused on building and get burned out, recuperation is necessary. Work on improving your internal dialogue with self and how you see the world, it will make a dramatic difference.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Start with your strengths to get the ball rolling then, begin to incorporate and invest in areas of self improvement that will make you a better leader and or manager. Some people get caught up in overthinking, perfectionism, and or being overwhelmed, so get they stuck, frustrated or demotivated, this can be debilitating if not done in a constructive way. You don’t have to be a master of all trades it’s not necessary, basic understanding of operations is a good start, remember self improvement is a major game changer. When able to, outsource the skill’s you’re not good at or don’t like doing this will free up space for you to expand yourself and brand.
