We recently connected with Shengjie Wu and have shared our conversation below.
Shengjie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding the meaning of life is a journey of discovery. I once dreamed of being a race car driver and basketball player. In high school, a teacher showed me how to use Photoshop to visualize my imagination. Its possibilities and creativity attracted me. I dreamed of becoming a designer.
However, due to my lack of design experience, I had to give up my obsession with design as a major. but I still pursued design as a minor because of my passion. A design professor learned about my story and passion for design. He encouraged me to pursue my dream and apply for the graduate program in graphic design to gain better knowledge and platform. I am very grateful for the guidance and advice of this professor. I had the opportunity to step into the gate of ArtCenter College of Design and feel the charm of design. At the same time, these stages of life made me realize that I am not just pursuing my dreams, but finding my purpose.
I have come to realize that finding one’s purpose is not a destination but a continuous process of growth, adaptation, and pushing one’s limits. It involves being open to new experiences, enjoying and learning from it, and staying true to one’s core values.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a graphic designer specializing in brand identity, typography, and book design. I am fascinated by using graphics and text to bridge the gap between individuals around the world, providing opportunities for everyone to explore various fields.
Design’s innate ability to create connections and engage individuals is an aspect that continues to fascinate me. It makes the gap between individuals accessible around the world. It opens up opportunities for everyone to explore various fields. Acknowledge global concerns through visual data interpretation. Design connects us to our emotions and senses. It can create enriched, immersive sensory experiences.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Passion, curiosity and continuous learning are the three qualities that have influenced me the most. Without my passion for graphic design, I might have lost the possibility of pursuing my dream of design and had to choose a future that I am not interested in. Curiosity is also very important. I think it is one of the qualities that makes me happy. It always helps me discover beautiful or interesting details in the world. Continuous learning always broadens my horizons. This quality helps me see the world from a new perspective. It also helps me find a new way to visualize my projects.
Always stay curious, especially if you are interested in creative careers. It can help you broaden your horizons. Provide a new perspective to see the world and your creative works. Most importantly, it can help you stay passionate about your work and career.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“The Creative Act, A Way of Being” is the book that has played an important role in my creative career. This book not only guides me to think and act like an artist and creator. It also helps me to think critically and with different perspectives, As the author mentioned, “Sometimes the mistakes are what a work great Humanity breathes in mistakes”, and I highly agree with it. We need to allow mistakes to happen, to discover the happy accident with it.
