We recently connected with Sherilynn Marilyn and have shared our conversation below.
Sherilynn, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Where do I get my resilience from? Hello beautiful people, it’s SherilynnMarilyn, creative Director and beauty designer.
To answer your question I would have to start with giving credit to the most high for my personal design as a human and second, I can start by saying being a woman infused with melanin in America I can give all thanks to my ancestors. As a whole race of humans, people have thrown many obstacles our way to ensure the development of having no other choice but to be resilient.
“Resilience is the ability to move through and grow from difficult times. It’s a skill you develop over time from the lessons and experiences you absorb as you grow up and face challenges.” Says the JED foundation
Although to become a resilient person, I would have to push through the process and become successfully adapted to difficulties and or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and apply those adjustments to my external and internal demands.
I am still actively becoming more resilient in my journey everyday.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a Creative Director, Swinging within the departments of makeup, hair, wardrobe, and photography. I am working on a few collaborations with some really dynamic artists in the fashion, film and beauty industry that vary along the lines of providing ideas and services that get the juices going. It’s always exciting to team up creatively. This time I’m more focused on the marketing advertising of people places and products.
And as a Hair designer at the Hot Spot Natural Hair Salon, I love getting my hands in the kinky, coily, curly strands, creating various styles that celebrate our Hair-Story to uplift the mindset around our crown of curls.
Which brings me to my most active interests as a creative artist I’m currently developing a product line with and for my Doll Babies and Gents.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The areas of knowledge, qualities and or skills that helped me develop was my work ethic, building quality relationships, networking skills and my consistency to learn. Wanting to be the best version of myself as a creative has been my most rewarding set of skills. It’s the evolution of self development that keeps me moving forward.
If I had any valued advice to give the younger generation of people it would be to work together, lead with your whole heart and find various ways to solve political and practical issues using your diverse skills within your art.
Be the best version of yourself both boldly and unapologetically, everyday and in every way.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The particular challenge that I’m facing at the moment is to conquer one’s self. It’s time to release any and everything that is holding me back in any areas that I haven’t acknowledged or discovered. Whilst doing my Self work, what I’ve learned is to believe in your physical self, and your inner self , be kind, patient and be graceful to my creative self.
Using my ability to create is an act of power and I want to develop the wild child within, and share success with her, taking care of any wounds she had to endure along the way. I’m waking up the inner Phoenix and establishing flight.
