Meet Sherri Anne Austria-Portela

We recently connected with Sherri Anne Austria-Portela and have shared our conversation below.

Sherri Anne, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Optimism is like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day—it brightens everything up! It’s amazing how our mindset can shape our experiences. Choosing to focus on the positive and not getting bogged down by the negative is a powerful approach. It’s like having a pair of glasses that only allows us to see the beauty and potential in every situation.

And embracing optimism give me a lighter feeling. It’s like shedding the weight of worries and anxieties, and it frees me up to enjoy life to the fullest. When we’re optimistic, we’re more open to new opportunities, and we tend to attract positive vibes and people into our lives.

I believe optimism is a skill that we can all work on. It’s not about ignoring the challenges or pretending that everything is perfect, but rather about facing those challenges with a positive outlook. It’s a journey of learning to find the silver linings, even in the toughest of times.

Optimism could be influenced by our upbringing, experiences, and the people we surround ourselves with. But at the end of the day, it’s also an effort on our part to choose to live our lives with this optimistic mindset and see the good in everything. That’s a beautiful way to approach life, and it can lead to a more fulfilling and joyful journey.

Liife is full of ups and downs, but having that optimistic lens can make the ride much more enjoyable.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m thrilled to introduce myself and share my passion with you. I’m Sherri Austria-Portela, a business owner and a tattoo artist at Ethos Art Haus Tattoo with an incredible journey that took me all the way from the Philippines to the United States.

Tattooing found its way into my heart twelve years ago, and it’s been an amazing ride ever since. Little did I know that this art form would become the bridge between my Filipino heritage and my new life here in the heart of Los Angeles.

As a Filipino transplant, my cultural roots have always been an essential part of who I am. It’s a treasure trove of art, traditions, and stories that deserve to be shared and celebrated. And what better way to do that than through my tattoos? Each piece I create holds a piece of my culture, woven into the ink, and etched onto the skin of those who choose to wear it proudly.

Now, as I embark on this exciting new chapter, I’m beyond excited to have a brick and mortar studio right here in this diverse and accepting space that is Los Angeles.

Through my studio, I aim to introduce my art together with my talented team of artists. It’s a space where we’ll not only create stunning tattoos but also celebrate the beauty of culture and acceptance.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Humility, eagerness to learn, and patience. These three have been very impactful for me on my career journey to my self-discovery.

Humility is like the secret sauce that keeps us grounded. It reminds us that no matter how much we achieve, there’s always more to learn and room to grow. Embracing this quality allows us to stay open to new ideas, perspectives, and possibilities.

And the joy of constantly learning! There’s something magical about the feeling of acquiring new knowledge and skills. It’s like having a never-ending buffet of wisdom, and we get to choose what we want to feast on. Staying curious and eager to learn keeps our minds sharp and our hearts hungry for more. It’s the fuel that propels us forward on our journey.

But here’s the deal: patience is the true virtue that keeps it all together. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are our careers or life paths. It’s all about trusting the process and finding that sweet spot between allowing things to unfold naturally and putting in the effort to make things happen. It’s like planting seeds and watching them grow—a little sunshine, a little water, and a whole lot of patience.

Now, if you’re just starting on this journey, here’s a golden nugget of advice—be patient! It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of wanting immediate results, but remember, good things take time. Stay committed to your goals, put in the work, and let life work its magic. You’ll be amazed at how things fall into place when you trust the timing of your own journey.

So, as you venture forth on your path of discovery and career building, hold on tight to those three magical qualities: humility, eagerness to learn, and patience. Embrace the process with a smile, knowing that each step is taking you closer to the person you’re destined to become.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
First and foremost, I remind myself to take a deep breath and embrace the moment I’m in. It’s like hitting the pause button and savoring the present. Finding that quiet space is my secret weapon. I just give myself a moment to calm down and gather my thoughts.

Once I’m feeling a bit more centered, I take a look at the tasks ahead and break them down. Prioritizing the most important tasks first is like setting the table for success.

Self-care is also crucial! So, amidst the hustle and bustle, I make sure to take breaks and prioritize my health. After all, a healthy mind and body are the foundation for everything we do.

And as for boundaries? They’re like my life’s little protectors! I’ve learned to set them up like a fortress to safeguard my precious time and energy. It’s amazing how liberating it can be to say “no” when it’s needed.

And guess what? It’s okay to ask for help! We’re social beings, and sometimes we just need that extra support—whether it’s from friends, family, or even colleagues.

And when the going gets tough, remember to breathe, break things down, and embrace the power of self-care and setting boundaries. And if you ever feel like you could use a hand, don’t hesitate to lean on your tribe for support.
