We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sherri Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sherri below.
Hi Sherri, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I’m a military brat. lol. I know that’s wild to start that off in that way, however, I believe that is what molded me to navigate in spaces where I was the only little black girl in the room. My father was in the Army for 20 years. We moved every two years, so I had to make new friends at a new school, knowing that I’d be leaving them for a whole new set in two years. We lived in Athens, GA, Long Island, NY, and Harrisburg, PA. (Just to name a few.) I remember boldly walking up to those kids asking them, “will you be my friend?” I had lots of friends. Lol. So, throughout my life, I’ve been able to always be myself in a room full of people who don’t look like me. I’ve always been different, in the best way. I learned to stay true to my heritage, my upbringing, and my beautiful black skin. I thank my parents for that experience because I wouldn’t be who I am today without that military experience.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Sherri Brown, representing Birmingham, Alabama and by the end of this conversation, we’re gonna be besties. LOL. I’m an artist, a singer ( really a SANGER), an aspiring actress, a confident entertainer, and a God fearing woman with BIG DREAMS.
I began singing at a very young age, however, I vividly remember rocking a crowd at church at the age of 9. We were in PA at the time, and I knew I could sing after that one church service. To make this shorter, I began singing professionally when I graduated from the University of Alabama in 2006. I auditioned, and became a background vocalist for American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard. What a time to be alive! What’s up Ruben?! I was on tour with him for 4 years, and man, it was a jam packed four years! I sang background vocals on shows such as Tyra Banks, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Morning America, and so much more! Even an Oscar’s party in LA. My most fave experience was singing at a fashion show in Lagos, Nigeria! Crazy right??! 22 years old living my dreams, not knowing that they were my dreams as of yet. That experience catapulted everything Sherri Brown, ya hear me? lol. I knew then that I was made for entertaining, singing, and I wanted to be a star. Fast forward, I set out to release my own music. Before that, I recorded demos for major artists such as Lil Mo, Keyshia Cole, and I’m currently singing bgvs on a song on Yolanda Adam’s album released in 2024.
Speaking of 2024, it was a great year! I had the amazing opportunity of opening up for artists such as Fantasia, SWV, Syleena Johnson, J. Howell, and I may be missing a few. Isn’t that a blessing??
I also released a single called “Can’t Keep” which is available on all streaming platforms. AND, I filmed a video for that song that you can watch on YouTube!! That’s still wild to me! I thank God for that. More music will be coming soon. For example, a remix to my single is coming and I have an amazing featured artist on that track! It’s good y’all! Please be on the lookout for it, cause it’s gonna be dropping in just a minute!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hmm, I’d say first and foremost, the confidence in knowing that I CAN. “I can do ALL things through Christ that strengthens me.” That in itself is unwavering, and that can’t be shaken not one bit.
Asking questions, and LISTENING have been skills that have helped me, not only in my career, but in life period. Linking myself with like minded , goal oriented people have helped shape me into the artist I am. Yes, I’m a new artist, however, I’ve been in the game for a while simply because I’ve asked the right questions, listened to the advice given, as well as, going for it and just DOING IT! It’s not easy. Everyday, I have to remind myself that I CAN. Everyday I remind myself, that I’m qualified, because of the knowledge that I’ve attained throughout the years.
One of the most important skills to me is to be a continuous learner. A learner won’t give up until they learn it all. That’s the journey I’m on, and I don’t plan on stopping!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth has been the belief in myself, and the having the faith of a mustard seed. (It was so hard for me not to say “mustaaaaaarrd” lol) No, but really. I was laid off my corporate job in Feb 2024. I had no idea what I was gonna do. Where’s the money gonna come from? Ya know, it was a tough time. The only answer I had was God. I knew that with Him, ALL things are possible. So, I went all gas, no brakes, on my music. I now had the time for the studio. I now had the time to focus on what God placed right in front me. It became a faith walk! Rather a faith run ! lol. But, it’s been the best “exercise” that I’ve ever done. My faith is solid, and God is my guy.
