Meet Sherrie Simmons

We were lucky to catch up with Sherrie Simmons recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sherrie, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem by accepting and celebrating who I am and being proud of the things that make me special, like my eye for fashion and creativity. There is only one Sherrie and that’s my super power.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Sherrie Simmons and I’m a professional stylist and wardrobe Buyer for Television & Film. For the past decade, I’ve worked in the entertainment industry on the Soul Train, BET Hip Hop, VMAs, Teen Choice, Emmy and BMI Awards shows.

I’ve worked with celebrity clients Neyo, Janelle Monae, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Miley Cyrus, Cam Newton, Yvonne Orji, Devale Ellis, and Crystal Reneé. ⁣⁣

I’ve worked on over 28 film & television productions, including Tyler Perry’s SISTAS and CREED III Starring Michael B. Jordan. Additionally, I’ve worked on commercials, editorial and promo photoshoots, e-commerce for iconic brands like AfroSheen and successful subscription services like CurlBox. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣

What’s most exciting about my career in fashion and film is that no two days are ever alike. One day I’m sourcing clothes for a film and the next, I’m conducting late night client fittings.

The entertainment industry keeps me on my toes in the best possible way. I work incredibly hard, but I get to create art through clothing, travel, meet and work with some of the most talented and amazing people and continuously LEARN! As seasoned as I am, Im still a student and I’m always learning new things…which I LOVE!

Since I’ve been so blessed to work in an industry that I ABSOLUTELY love,
My goal now is to pay it forward and share everything that I’ve learned with new and aspiring buyers. I use social media to share inspiration and pro-tips and will be launching a course very soon.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were the moxie that it took to leave my well paying corporate job to purse a career in fashion. The faith and persistence that it took to bet on myself when some didn’t see the vision and the belief in my own knowledge, skills and abilities to create a career from the ground up.

For those early in their journey, I would simply say that if there is something that lights a fire within you…no matter the struggles or fear, go after it relentlessly.

And even if these particular qualities don’t come naturally, you can develop them by really taking the time to learn and develop your craft. Stay ready!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Their isn’t one person who has helped me overcome challenges or build and develop essential skills, qualities or knowledge…there are many…actually too many to name. But what I will say is that aligning yourself with like minded creatives who believe in you, as well as those whom you share commonalities with, will help you to build a network that will see you through any challenge. Maintaining and nurturing that network is a major key for buyers and stylists. The more solid your network, the easier your job and the more successful you will be.
