We recently connected with Shilpa Tiku and have shared our conversation below.
Shilpa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose in life has been a journey of discovery that has been shaped by my experiences in market research, modeling for leading brands in India, and food blogging. As a market researcher, I developed a keen eye for detail and an analytical mind that helped me understand consumer behavior and market trends.
However, it was during my time as a model for leading brands in India that I discovered my love for creativity and expression. Modeling gave me a platform to showcase my talents and inspired me to explore new avenues for creative expression.
Through my journey of self-discovery, I found my true passion in food blogging. As a food blogger, I discovered my talent for creating visually appealing and delicious dishes. It allowed me to connect with others who shared my love of food and to express my creativity in new and exciting ways.
I believe that my purpose is to use my skills and talents to create a positive impact in the world. Whether it’s through market research to better understand the needs of consumers, modeling to inspire creativity, or food blogging to share my passion for culinary arts, I am committed to using these to make a difference.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
So I am a Chief Research Officer and Partner at a market research and consulting company. We conduct research on several topics that include water, energy, wastewater, air, consumer products, nutrition, beauty and several other topics. Other than that I blog on food and share recipes that enable busy people to make quick, healthy, fast recipes through fastcurries.com
As the Chief Research Officer and Partner at a market research and consulting company, I oversee research projects covering a wide range of topics, including water, energy, wastewater, air, consumer products, nutrition, and beauty, among others. My job provides me with a continuous opportunity for growth and development, as I strive to stay current with emerging and disruptive technologies that have the potential to change the world.
Working with leading companies to develop growth strategies is a passion of mine. I am deeply invested in the work I do and find the mental stimulation of learning and exploring new topics to be incredibly rewarding.
In addition to my full-time job, I also run a blog called Fastcurries.com, where I share quick, healthy, and easy recipes for busy people. This blog is something I enjoy doing and is a way for me to preserve the recipes from my family’s Kashmiri heritage. Being of Kashmiri Pandit descent, Kashmiri Pandits witnessed a tragic genocide in 1990, and were forced to flee our homes in Kashmir. The blog is my way of keeping our culture and language alive for future generations.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my opinion, the three most impactful qualities/skills are critical thinking, work ethic, and adaptability.
Critical thinking has empowered me to solve problems, make informed decisions, and nurture my curiosity. To grow as an individual, I believe it’s crucial to challenge assumptions, seek out diverse perspectives, conduct thorough research, actively listen, and acknowledge mistakes.
Work ethic is another vital quality for me. I prioritize self-discipline, emphasizing quality over quantity, valuing my time, prioritizing ongoing learning, and striving to be reliable and dependable.
Adaptability is an essential skill that everyone should develop. Life can throw curveballs, and it’s essential to practice acceptance, recover, and adapt to change. Instead of reacting impulsively, I strive to remain calm and adaptable, focusing on finding solutions to overcome challenges.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents have been my ultimate role models, emphasizing the importance of education since I was a child. They instilled in me the values of stability, self-reliance, empowerment, virtue, and critical thinking that come with having a strong education. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had access to quality education thanks to my parents’ unwavering support and guidance.
