Meet Shirley Melgarejo

We were lucky to catch up with Shirley Melgarejo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shirley, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

You never know what someone is going through. At the rate we are going, it can also be difficult to see empathy from others. My generosity comes from my faith in who Jesus is for me. I hope to reflect that in my work, opportunities, and the way I serve others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I actually started this creative content journey back in 2019. As I’ve grown my skillset, I was always encouraged to turn it into a business, but I had other goals at the time. I started creating content during college, transitioned into marketing, and now I create content for small businesses. I wanted to create a space for all-around services like visuals, photography, video, social media strategy, and rebranding, all in one space at affordable, manageable rates. When I was looking to upgrade my content, there were so many different options that not every social media manager or photographer offered, and it felt overwhelming. So I am glad I can offer a wide range of services to all.

What excites me is being able to be a small part of a brand or small business! As a small business owner myself, people disregard how much good quality and consistency (no matter how small) make a difference. I love connecting with others & bringing their ideas to life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

First, definitely start small. I originally started with a Canon DSLR kit (that was originally for my mom! I learned how to use it because I wanted to upgrade my local church media, and because of that desire, it became a creative passion for me. From there, with practice, I knew I was able to invest in better quality gear and go from there.

Second, don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Especially when taking pictures, this is essential for taking pictures, connecting with people and collaborations.

Third, do things differently, yes, get inspiration, but if there is a strategy that best resonates with you, your people, and community will find you. Don’t be afraid to tell a story as opposed to a strategy tactic that you’ve heard many times before online—those will make a bigger impact.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client would be someone who wants to start a project but doesn’t know where to begin. They aren’t afraid of slow growth and are willing to be open to suggestions. Someone who wants to build a brand/community and engage organically.
