We recently connected with Shoni Alleyne and have shared our conversation below.
Shoni, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
To be honest Imposter Syndrome is something I am still overcoming. What helps me when I am invited to events or get opportunities I was initially afraid to pursue is to remember one thing: “If I wasn’t meant to be in the room, I wouldn’t be invited.” I try my best to remember that. When I forget, my support system of friends and therapist reminds me that my dream has become my reality and I deserve it. All of us start our story somewhere and it doesn’t need to be perfect, we just need to get started. A person who is trying their best could never be an imposter in my opinion.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My life is filled with music and memorable moments at the moment. Currently, I’m using my voice as an audiobook narrator for underrepresented women. As a reader, I enjoy using my voice to amplify women’s stories. Every time an author chooses me I feel honored. I also feel honored and full when I’m singing. Currently, I’m finishing my next R&B project and I couldn’t be happier. I want to help all of us get back to love one melody at a time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First, learning the power of self-love. I wouldn’t have had the courage to pursue my goals if I hadn’t learned that I deserved to live a life I didn’t want to escape. It’s okay to choose yourself, even if it looks different to others.
Secondly, learning to engineer. Working in the music and audio space is challenging but being able to record myself and knowing how to speak up about my sound has been extremely beneficial. I can save time and money in the studio. Learning engineering skills has helped me with music and audiobooks to gain opportunities and create opportunities. Watching all those tutorials was worth it! lol
If you’re interested in an industry I recommend learning as much as possible. Become a lifelong learner. If you can sign up for a program, or mentorship, read a book, do all of it. You will save yourself heartache and money if you are educated in the industry you’re seeking to thrive in.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I would say my biggest area of growth has been self-development. I had to learn how to get out of my own way. I was the one blocking myself from opportunities. Those days are over now! I know what I want and I plan to get it. I’m not allowing imposter syndrome or self-sabotage to block any abundance destined for me. You shouldn’t either.
