We were lucky to catch up with Shoni Bell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shoni, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
In one word: reflection. I had to learn to look back at all of my successes to remind myself that I actually know what I am doing and know what I am talking about. When I was a brand new business owner working with clients for the first time, that crippling anxiety would pop up seemingly out of nowhere. There was a lot of self-talk happening! I had to tell myself that I could handle what was in front of me.
Honestly, imposter syndrome still creeps in now and again. When it does, outside of reflection, I find that diving into research helps. For example, if I am working on a project with a client and we don’t necessarily speak the same industry language, I do a ton of research so I can “catch up” on the vocabulary as much as possible. I still ask questions if needed (I am human) but, feeling more prepared to communicate with my client, truly dissolves the knee-jerk apprehension.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the proud owner of Summit Resume Service. I help professionals write targeted resumes and optimize their LinkedIn profiles. I launched SRS full-time on May 1, 2020, with little more than a gut feeling that it was all going to work out. I love what I do! I love working on projects with professionals across diverse industries. I constantly learn new things and hear cool stories. My secret sauce is my ability to transform seemingly benign work stories into powerful resume content. Using a piece of paper to boost a job seekers confidence is my primary goal.
