Meet Shontae Carter

We recently connected with Shontae Carter and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shontae, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic definitely stems from my childhood. I remember as a child seeing my mom working countless back breaking jobs to provide for me and my three siblings. She was a single mother who did everything she could to take care of us. We always had what we needed but we didn’t always get what we wanted. That’s when I realized that nothing in life is free and you have to work for anything you want in this life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Shontae Carter and I am the owner and baker/cake artist of JustDesserts & Candies LLC. I am also a stay at home mom. I have three beautiful children and a wonderful husband who I have been with for 18 years. I am passionate about cake artistry and I pride myself on making sure my desserts taste just as good as they look. I also specialize in vegan cupcakes that will hopefully be in market soon. Some other things that bring me joy are painting, fuzzy socks, and iced coffee.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say that the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are having a humble heart, standing on my morals, and communication. Some advice I would give to someone who is early in their journey is to stay focused on your purpose, don’t try to compare yourself to everyone else. Even if they are in the same field as you. There is only one YOU! You were designed for your own path, figure out what your moral ground is and stand on that. Do not allow others to change who God created you to be. You are special and you are enough!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who trust me enough to let me have creative freedom. Someone who understands that cake decorating is an art form for me. When I get to have creative freedom I get to flow naturally and really connect with what I’m working on. I can spend hours upon hours decorating a cake if no one stops me! I genuinely love seeing the smiles on my clients faces when they see their cakes for the first time. It’s a joy that I hope stays with me as I continue this journey.
