Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shorn Marshall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shorn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
After I came from a very dark place of depression and almost committed suicide, I had a dream from my late grandmother, who passed away in 2000. She spoke to me about that I have to go back singing again, because every time I sing, everything that was negative around me disappeared. It was like her and God was talking to me and helped found my calling in music which saved my life.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been singing since I was 3 years old, writing songs since I was 14, and picked up the guitar at the age of 18. Every song I write is a piece of my life that I have experience. Every person that listened to it, come to me and said that “your music connects with me because I had going through the same thing, and you inspired me” It melts my heart completely because if I touched at least one person with my music, it shows that I’m doing the right thing when it comes to my life and career.
For 4 years now, I have been going through weight loss and emotional eating disorder recovery. So, I decided to work on a book about the struggles and the obstacles I have to go through this journey. In this book, you will read like my personal journal entries on what causes me to go through emotional eating and different methods on overcoming that and losing to my goal weight.
I’m still working in the studio making new music for a couple of projects such as my second album and a side EP before that.
I’m still teaching online lessons for those want to learn how to sing, play guitar, write songs, taking their music as a profession, crochet, and how to learn Microsoft Office. I have been teaching for almost 2 years now.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality that were most impactful in my journey was the “Hustler’s Instinct”. I got this trait from my father. Every day I wake up and find more ways to bring more streams of income. So, I kept on promoting on social media every day, showcasing my talents. When you Rise, you Grind. Don’t wait for your opportunities, look and create them. Whether it’s learning to better your craft or increasing your business.
The second quality is learning how to have a work-life balance. Monday through Friday, you work hard most of the day. When you done work, do not bring work home to you. Even though I work from home, you have to learn how to separate from work and personal. It can make your mental health even better. If you have an idea on work during your off days, leave a post-it and leave it until you get back to work.
The third quality is learning how to have tough skin. In the music business, you will have tough criticism. Not everyone will love your music, but many professionals have suggestions to improve. Take those suggestions and put it to use on improving your craft and always leave with your head up high and dignity.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am definitely looking for people to collaborate with. It helps expand my range as a singer/songwriter learning different things from other genres of music. I don’t have a box on what genre of music I’m in as long I fuse it together and making it work. Challenging myself and the person or people I’m working with will better ourselves by overcoming them together.
