Meet Shun Cheng Hsieh

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shun Cheng Hsieh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shun Cheng , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I’m fortunate to have a family that has supported me throughout my journey. They’ve given me the opportunity and resources to explore different paths, which not only helped me cultivate my sense of design but also allowed me to focus on my career without worrying about limitations. With their support, I’ve been able to pursue my passion freely, which has built my resilience and drive.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a footwear designer with a passion for blending functionality with aesthetic innovation. My journey has taken me from working with major brands to collaborating with smaller, independent labels, allowing me to develop a unique perspective on design. What excites me most about my work is the constant evolution of trends and technology, especially in how we integrate sustainability and digital tools into the creative process.

Currently, I’m exploring the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, particularly through AI rendering platforms and VR modeling software. These tools allow me to push the boundaries of what’s possible in footwear design, creating products that are both forward-thinking and timeless.

I’m also excited about a few upcoming projects, including new lifestyle footwear concepts that I’m developing, which will be shared soon. My goal is always to design products that not only look great but also meet the needs of people’s lifestyles. Whether it’s a casual sneaker or a performance shoe, I’m focused on creating something that resonates with the consumer on both a functional and emotional level.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are adaptability, curiosity, and empathy.

First, adaptability has been key in navigating the fast-paced, ever-changing world of design. Whether it’s learning new technologies like AI tools or adjusting to shifting market trends, being open to change has allowed me to stay relevant and innovative. For those early in their journey, I’d advise embracing new challenges and technologies. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; that’s where real growth happens.

Second, curiosity has fueled my ability to continuously learn and push boundaries. I’m always looking for new inspirations—whether from trends, archives, or even other industries. My advice is to stay curious, always be learning, and don’t limit your sources of inspiration to just your field. Broadening your horizons will give you fresh perspectives and ideas.

Lastly, empathy has shaped how I approach design. Understanding the needs and desires of the consumer allows me to create products that truly resonate with them. For those starting out, I suggest focusing on your user and thinking deeply about how your designs will impact their lives. Empathy helps you not only design better but also communicate and effectively collaborate with others

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was giving me the freedom to explore my passions without pressure. They never pushed me into a specific career path but instead provided me with the resources and support to try different things. This allowed me to discover my love for design at my own pace and in my own way. Their belief in me helped build my confidence, and knowing they were behind me gave me the courage to take risks and pursue my creative career fully. That trust and encouragement were invaluable in shaping who I am today.
