We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sierra Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sierra , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
This is a question I believe everyone has to encounter and answer for themselves at some point in life. I embarked on this answer just a few short years after becoming a mother and dropping out of my college education for my children’s opportunity to thrive. My husband and I say, “Your purpose is at the intersection of where your passions and serving other people lie”. Take a look at the gifts God has built within your core that you’ve intrinsically loved for as long as you can remember, this is your joy. Then, when that passion begins to serve other people within your community, that is when it becomes a purpose.
Being a mother was the only thing I wanted for as long as I can remember. I had such a passion for teaching children and writing stories, even as a young child. As I was growing in motherhood, I had so many questions, “How do I do this right? How do I make sure I don’t screw my children up? How do I raise them according to the bible?” These questions lead me on a journey of finding and understanding the true grace of Jesus. It isn’t at all what the world preaches to you! I fell in love with the Lord on this journey of purpose and now I get to intersect it with serving people-my community.
I’ve written a fun, witty story of a mom traversing the challenges of motherhood, finding Jesus and grace in the sloughs of hard days. It is called, “Embrace Grace, Mama!” and aims to equip other seeking mothers with the same practical tools I’ve placed in our home to aid grace-based parenting. I share personal stories that give you insight to my relatable struggles in hopes that you see I am just as human as you. It’s written as an encouraging letter to help lift you up and for you to find your own divine purpose within your motherhood.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Professionally, I am focused on bringing practical parenting application and accurate biblical truth to mothers all around the world. I’ve written a nonfiction story that illuminates the redemption story of a Mama deep in traumatic bondage to a motherhood of freedom and joy.
I know there are others out there who struggle with the same concepts that I have. I know my testimony of grace can help being the sprout of someone else’s.
This is my purpose, through motherhood, to help lead Mama’s in the trenches of motherhood into a relationship with Christ. It is an artistic career, nonetheless, in the business of radically changing generational lives.
There are several ways this can be accomplished:
-Through the reading of the book itself: Embrace Grace, Mama! set to release late 2024
-Through social media microblogging: @embracegracemama
-Through personal 1:1 mentorship that deep dives the principles within EGM (Embrace Grace, Mama!)
-Through an encouraging and uplifting virtual bible study that launches every 8 weeks.
The heart behind my work is to come alongside mother’s from all walks of life and let them know they are not alone. There are other systems you can implement with your children that can cultivate a relationship of warmth with them, even if you do not have a warm relationship with your parents. I focus on sibling love and respect as well. When the sibling can communicate and love well, peace within the home prospers.
The bible is the core of my work. I do not believe we are without a blueprint. The Creator of our dear children has left us with a roadmap in how to raise them up. These principles I teach throughout social media or within mentorship aren’t new fad ideas, but old, lost with time truths that we need to reignite into our parenting.
I work with mother’s from any and every walk of life. Non-believer or seasoned Christian, the backbone of our work is the desire for growth and the intrinsic heart of our child.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that were most impactful to come to this place in my journey are: an avid appetite for growth, a humble nature and desire for truth. Characteristics that are not intrinsic, meaning, they don’t come naturally, but we have to cultivate.
An appetite for growth ensures that in a year, you will not be physically, mentally, spiritually, or emotionally in the same position as you were prior. It propels you forward in life.
A humble nature will allow you the ability to accept critique and place in you an appropriate view of yourself in regards to how much as just don’t know. This will make you and your work attractable.
Lastly, a desire for truth. There is a constant combing of truth that must be done with everything we hear. We must not be willing to settle for one person said when it comes to the most important aspects of our life-such as motherhood or marriage. A great phrase puts it this way, “Something that is true, is not new. Something that is new, is not always true.” If it is a new fad, we must be leery of it’s roots. This desire to find the truth will keep you on a seeking path.
Seeking the Word of God and His character is the single best way to grow these characteristics! I want to do it with you. The amazing thing about a humble nature is that we recognize we will never arrive at the destination that is “good enough”, our souls will forever be seeking to grow more like Christ. I want to grow in motherhood with you, which is why a community is so drastically important.
There are books on each of these topics to grow individually, but cumulatively, they will aide your motherhood journey.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am seeking Mama’s! For all and every walk of life who want to learn and grow in their relationship to their children. I explain it this way in my book, “Motherhood is one of the very few things on this earth that is eternal. We take it with us when we die.” Relationships don’t have room to be lost to the cacophony of this world. Our children, as mothers, are the greatest investment of our time and energy. They are the most costly, the most exasperating and exhausting.
We need a community of uplifters and exhorters within the motherhood culture and I want to be in your community.
I would love to partner with you and share in your triumphs and valleys. I would love to be a person you lean and learn from while you are traversing a confusing season of parenthood.
