Meet Sierra Stone

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sierra Stone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sierra, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Life is full of ups and downs and unexpected circumstances, but the way to win is to look for the silver lining in everything and keep moving forward no matter what. The only way to truly fail is to stop trying and accept defeat. Each time I’ve faced adversity, I gain more confidence and stronger trust in myself because I always have my own back. That self trust lets me know that no matter what life throws at me, I will be able to handle it and come out stronger on the other side.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m an artist! I’m a singer, songwriter, and musician. I play piano, saxophone, and guitar. I have a very hands on approach when working with my producer so all of my songs are uniquely mine and written by me. I try not to confine myself to a single genre, but my first EP is alt pop, pop rock, and punk pop. Due to the current state of the music industry where over 100,000 songs are uploaded to Spotify every day, I’ve written each song with the potential to be a single and am releasing them one by one. Individually, they’re all great, but together they mirror the stages of grief and tell a story about a very formative era in my life. I think these are songs that a majority of women can relate to and I hope my music can provide them with a sense of comfort in the same way other musicians have done for me. Currently, 2 of the 5 songs are released.

Toxic is a raw and rebellious punk pop jam entertaining my fantasies of revenge. My ex boyfriend was an alcoholic mess, but I lived with him so leaving right away wasn’t an option. There were too many nights to count where he would keep me awake with his screaming tantrums, breaking things, and depriving me of sleep for days on end. Hiding under my blanket, I typed out the lyrics to Toxic on my phone during one of his episodes. It’s a more light hearted/humorous take on a serious situation. It had a very divided response. Some music critics described it as tasteless while others called it a fun blast from the past. Regardless, it’s true to the emotions I was feeling at the time and I’m still proud of it.

A Man Like You is the second song that was released. It’s a pop rock/alt pop ballad with some bluesy undertones to it. Lyrically, it’s bittersweet and refreshingly honest with a little bit of a witty edge. It signifies a return to myself, reflecting on the relationship, and a declaration of self worth.

The next single to be released is called Damage Control. Without giving too much away, what I can tell you about it is that it’s an ADHD anthem. It’s electrifying, energetic, and chaotic. It’s one of the most fun songs I’ve written, and I’m so excited to share it with the world.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Empathy, creativity, and a sense of humor are three qualities that carry me through my journey and keep me happy. Empathy helps me understand and connect to other people. I feel like on a base level we are all motivated by the same thing: wanting to feel ok. Some people just approach it from an unhealed perspective. Through creativity, I’ve found a lot of peace. It’s the easiest way for me to express myself and feel fulfilled. Songwriting has proven to be a therapeutic activity for me and has helped me process a lot of painful situations and turn that difficulty into something beautiful. Sense of humor is important to me because it reminds me that life doesn’t have to be so serious. They say that laughter is the best medicine and I really find that to be true. One of my favorite things in the world is making people laugh.

Advice I have for others is to find a way to ground yourself and practice mindfulness. Exercise helps you find a balanced mental state. Take a minute to enjoy some fresh air. Those three qualities might not be the three that best carry you along your pursuits, so find what resonates with you and learn how to develop them and use them to your advantage. Creativity, however, is an untapped resource for a lot of people or they view it with a scarcity mindset. The more you exercise your creativity, the easier it will come to you. It can be infinite things: writing, cooking, drawing, playing an instrument, photography, joining an improv troupe, etc. Having a creative hobby can help you find a lot of fulfillment in your life.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely! I’m always looking to expand my network and connect with other creatives and entrepreneurs. People are always acknowledging my songwriting skills so I would love to get into a songwriting camp and write for other artists. I’m also interested in recording with other artists as well. I would love to explore different genres, but I hope to work on a country/southern rock single with another artist soon. If there are any artists, songwriters, producers, mixing engineers, videographers, photographers, social media managers, publicists or other industry professionals looking to contact me, you can find me on instagram or shoot me an email!
