We recently connected with Sigourny Love and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sigourny with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’d say my work ethic comes from the example set by my parents, both incredibly hardworking individuals who taught me early on that if you want something, you have to be willing to work for it—nothing is handed to you for free. Growing up, I watched them put in the time, dedication, and perseverance required to achieve their goals, and that instilled in me the importance of resilience and commitment.
Since becoming a mother to my beautiful son, Kai, my purpose and drive have only deepened. Everything I do is now with him in mind. I want to be a strong role model and build something he can be proud of. My “why” is to show him that with hard work and dedication, you can turn your dreams into reality.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a salon owner and stylist, my journey in the beauty industry started 15 years ago at M Salon Spa. With incredible mentorship guiding me, I discovered a true passion for hair and beauty, shaping the foundation of my career. After a thriving beginning, I stepped away to embrace motherhood and welcome my son, Kai, which deepened my commitment to balancing professional goals with family life. This led me to open a home-based salon, where I was able to grow my business while staying close to my family.
From those early days, my salon has blossomed into a vibrant space in downtown Burlington, where I lead a dedicated team at Hair Love by Sigourny. Located in a dynamic, women-supporting-women community, our area is filled with talented women entrepreneurs who uplift each other. I’m fortunate to connect with so many inspiring women business owners and enjoy supporting their ventures, attending their events, and building networks that benefit us all.
What excites me most about Hair Love is the way we make people feel—beautiful, confident, and cared for. Our team is passionate about creating a warm and welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors, and we aim to provide experiences that go beyond hairstyling.
Looking ahead, I’m eager to continue growing Hair Love and expanding our connections in the community. We’re working on new ways to offer unique services and experiences for our clients, and I can’t wait to share what’s coming next.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities have been the most impactful in my journey: hard work, resilience, and networking. First and foremost, I’ve learned that hard work truly does pay off. Success doesn’t come overnight; it’s the result of consistent effort, dedication, and pushing through challenges. My advice to anyone starting their journey is to stay committed, even on the tough days—every bit of hard work brings you closer to your goals.
Resilience is equally essential. There will be setbacks, but it’s important to stay focused, adapt, and keep moving forward. Remember that each challenge you overcome strengthens you.
Lastly, networking has been incredibly powerful. Connecting with people and building relationships has opened so many doors. This industry thrives on personal connections and recommendations, so developing the skill of connecting and genuinely talking to others can make a huge difference. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities might arise from a simple conversation. I love meeting new people, and in my work, those connections are invaluable. So, invest in building relationships—it’s as vital to success as any technical skill.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
One of the biggest challenges I’m currently facing is finding highly skilled, passionate stylists who want to join our team. The market has changed, and it’s become harder to find stylists who not only have the expertise but also the drive to grow alongside us. Although I’m fortunate to already have an amazing team, I’d love to add a few more talented people to keep expanding our business.
To overcome this, I’m focusing on patience and consistency. We’re dedicated to doing top-quality work every day, and I’m committed to building an environment that stylists genuinely want to be part of—a supportive, creative space where they can thrive. By fostering this kind of workplace, I’m confident the right stylists will be drawn to us organically over time.
