We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Simmy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Simmy, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
Self discipline isn’t something I’ve mastered, but something I have a somewhat regular access too. It’s not easy forcing yourself to DO something everyday, especially when life has other things begging for your attention. What helped me was redefining what it meant for ME specifically, and adjusting my goals as such. Discipline for me will never look exactly like it can/would for someone else. Accepting that I’ll have a unique version of what consistently being disciplined for myself will look like was really important.
I’m also a very goal-driven person. I try to make the process, the goal. The process of showing up for myself, is the goal. Thus, every time I do that I’ve checked the box. Kind of a bit like constantly readjusting the goal post for myself. Unhinged? Maybe.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Simmy. I’ve spent the majority of my life in school. Throughout school, I gravitated towards English, earning my Communications degree. I’m highly opinionated, and love to talk about the things I love to talk about. However, one of my LEAST favourite parts of the essay writing format is how stale it is. How difficult it can sometimes be to inject personality in writing, And often, how frowned upon it is in academic spaces. I love sharing my feelings about broader contemporary pop-culture topics, while being interesting and funny.
Youtube, and the video essay format is where I was able to combine my two loves, and that’s where 5 Seconds of Simmy was born. An amalgamation of my ideas, humour, and hopefully entertainment sense. I like to keep it educational, inject my own hot takes, and make you giggle. Medicine in a slice of cheese. Or as Bo Burnham said, “Kind of a rant, kind of a song.”

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the most important skill is patience. Patience. Patience, and then some more patience.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Honestly, I’d probably fall off the face of the planet. I’d probably be travelling all over the world, eating delicious food, petting animals and creating any kind of art my heart feels called too. There’s never enough time for just the easy stuff.
I’d still continue to talk about things that interest me though. I don’t think any amount of leisure could kill the yapper inside of me.
