Meet Si’mone ‘DJ Monie’ Lewis

We recently connected with Si’mone ‘DJ Monie’ Lewis and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Si’mone ‘DJ Monie’, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Confidence and self-esteem are two things that truly define my brand. I became self aware at an early age and while my friends were stuffing their bras to try to fit in, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to do those things. I realized that I was special, just the way I was created and if people couldn’t see that, that was their loss. As I got older and had a daughter of my own, I try really hard to empress upon her the same values. I’m an acquired taste, and I’m not for everybody. I’m ok with that!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The best advice that I can give is to stay true to yourself and to do whatever makes you happy. In my early entrepreneurial journey, I thought that you had to sacrifice (time, money, and sometimes your sanity) in order to be successful. I neglected myself by staying up late to complete projects that I didn’t even charge enough money for in the first place. I was giving my talent away for next to nothing. It started making me hate doing the work that I loved doing. I knew what I had to do… I had to raise my price! I feared that I wouldn’t be able to land clients that could afford my new price, since I had a hard time landing clients to pay my current price. But I did what I felt like I needed to, and guess what?! New clients started coming my way, and the thing that I was once worried about… NEVER HAPPENED! Long story short, believe in yourself. Believe in your talents. And don’t cheapen yourself because someone else doesn’t see your value!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was teach me how to be an entrepreneur. My mother has been an entrepreneur my entire life and she taught me the importance of being in control of my own time and money. Growing up, I worked in Corporate America, but I knew going in, that it would be a means to an end for me. When asked at my last interview, my (what would become my boss) asked me where I saw myself in the next 5 years, and without hesitation, I said “owning my own business”. I gasped as soon as I said it! But he later told me that my response was one of the reasons that he hired me. Needless to say, I only lasted 2 years – and never looked back!
