We recently connected with Simone Mack-Orr and have shared our conversation below.
Simone, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Wow! Finding my purpose came out of me needing to be in an environment that allowed me to do and include all the things that I love most. I love people, I love music, I love fitness and wellness and I love positivity. I found the activity that included all of those and that was fitness. When I would take the podium to instruct and guide people through a workout I recognized the power and impact in that action. I had the opportunity to create an experience with people for a certain amount of time. I have always wanted to help people feel better which I think came from me finding that music and exercise and positive talk made me feel better; so why not share it.
My purpose is rooted in how I’ve encouraged and motivated myself over the years. I’ve had several career paths but the one I have traveled the longest is my fitness career, because I feel my best when I’m doing it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a fitness coach, enthusiast, creator, dreamer, mo-menter, wife and mom! I do ALL the things and I would not have it any other way. My business is Smack Fitness LLC, and I offer a safe, energy filled fitness coaching experience. I meet my clients where they are, I show them where they can go and I offer them the opportunity to get there or “Keep Mo-Menting” as we say in the Smack Fitness community. I’m most excited about being able to show people how to take up space and give themselves the space they need to get the results that they want. We follow what I call the Check approach. I am Capable, I am Human, I am Energy, I am Community and I am Kind. Each day we have the opportunity to try on each of these statements and see how we can activate them in our daily walk. I think what I’m most excited about is being able to take all of this to next level and pour it into a consistence space by opening my actual physical location. I will have on specific location in downtown Spartanburg that people can come to and not worry about whether determining if their workout will still take place or not.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills or qualities… I would start by saying that it important to be coachable. Learn as much as you can from those that are invested in your growth and are willing to share with you. You should always be learning, which doesn’t necessarily mean you have to act on it, but having additional tools in your toolbox is cool. Knowing your community has been very beneficial to the growth and success of my business. Knowing who you want to serve and who is drawn to your service helps to create and develop your community.
A really big tip is to learn the business, study your back office. While my purpose and passion are tied to me giving to people and working with them, I also have to make sure that the business is sustainable. Free doesn’t fund your dream, it can deflate it if you’re not on top of your finances. Learn your numbers.
Focus on what you do best. Sometimes we see other people doing new things and think that we need to do that, but if your audience/community isn’t focused on it then why should you be.
There will be highs and lows and when the highs happen I ride them and thank them and remember them and when the lows happen, I remember them as well and thank them for the lesson. Growth in your business comes from experience. Never having a low moment can really scare someone out of their purpose if they aren’t prepared. Prepare for it all!!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book that has had the biggest impact on me is The Practice of Groundedness by Brad Stulberg. Not only as a business owner, but as a mom and a wife it’s so important to be grounded so that the things that take place daily can set and develop and be sustainable. Stulberg defines Groundedness as an unwavering internal strength an self confidence that sustains you through up and downs. This is why I say keep Mo-Menting. Getting through all the things that life throws at you and still being able to take those emotions and feelings and still make half way decent decisions, because we aren’t perfect we are always in practice of the things we do. The other book that has been helpful is ‘Set Boundaries, Find Peace and the boundaries that I had to set were hard, but necessary in order for me to be grounded, get out of my own way and remind myself of what I am capable of.
Do what you need to do to be comfortable in the spaces that you navigate as you grow your business, it really helps out in the long run.
